Nicosia hosts informal Energy Ministers meeting

EU energy autonomy, resilience and competitiveness, as well as progress towards the Energy Union, are expected to dominate discussions at the informal meeting of EU Energy Ministers taking place on Wednesda at the Conference Centre in Nicosia, under the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.

The meeting will be chaired by Cyprus Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry Michael Damianos. According to the General Secretariat for European Affairs, the sessions are aimed at promoting political dialogue and strengthening cooperation among member states and the Cyprus Presidency also seeks to advance Europe’s energy autonomy and accelerate the implementation of the Energy Union.

Discussions will also cover the Union’s energy system, sector-specific challenges and strategic cooperation. Representatives of the European Free Trade Association, as well as trusted partners, will also take part in the meeting.

Ministers are expected to arrive at 8:30 a.m., with possible doorstep statements scheduled ahead of the meeting.

Proceedings will begin at 9:00 a.m., with the first session focusing on the Energy Union.

A second session on energy storage will follow at 11:00 a.m., while energy security will be discussed during a working lunch attended by heads of delegations.

A press conference is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
