Palmas calls for decisions to enhance Europe’s strategic autonomy on security matters

Defence Minister, Vasilis Palmas, called on Tuesday for decisions to strengthen the European Defence Agency (EDA) in order to enhance Europe’s strategic autonomy on security matters concerning the EU’s 27 member states.

In statements ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (Defence) in Brussels, Palmas said that failing to achieve greater European autonomy in security and defense creates difficulties for the EU’s overall political influence and standing on the global stage.

Referring to the agenda of the meeting, the minister described it as a lengthy session covering several major issues, including the war in Ukraine. ‘Of course, we want to state very clearly that we fully support the territorial sovereignty and integrity of Ukraine. We welcome the sanctions already imposed and, at the same time, the financial support being provided to the country through lending,’ Palmas said.

According to the Minister, the 27 member states would also discuss ‘the war involving Iran and, naturally, issues related to Europe’s security in connection with the crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean.’

‘At the same time, we must exchange views and take decisions regarding support for the EDA, because all European countries have realised and understood that without Europe’s autonomy in matters concerning the security of the 27 member states, Europe creates certain conditions and problems regarding its broader political influence,’ the Defense Minister emphasised. He concluded by expressing hope that the meeting would be productive and constructive.
