Turkey violates the UN Charter and it is incompatible with such a behaviour to pursue the assumption of the position of UN Secretary-General, Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, said on Friday evening.
In statements to the media upon his arrival at an event in Frenaros village, the President was asked by journalists to comment on reports that Turkish diplomat Feridun Sinirlioglu has been seeking to be appointed as the next UN Secretary-General.
‘I have nothing to comment on this in public. Turkey is doing its job and we are doing ours,’ he said, adding that ‘it is incompatible with a country’s behaviour to seek the assumption of such a position when it violates the United Nations Charter.”
Turkey has been occupying Cyprus’ northern third since 1974, when it invaded the island.
