Strong winds, a drop in temperatures, snowfall, rain and storms are affecting Cyprus since Friday morning as a yellow warning is in place until 22.00 (local time) this evening.
A slight increase in temperature is expected on Saturday while on Sunday there is a forecast for rains, isolated storms and snow in the mountains. Monday and Tuesday a fresh condition will affect the island.
Meteorology Department official Andreas Chrysanthou told the Cyprus News Agency that strong winds affected mostly Paphos. Strong winds of 6-7 Beaufort, with gusts of up to 8 Beaufort are expected throughout the island, he said.
Rains and isolated storms will also be affecting the island in the next hours.
Residents of the Troodos mountains already experienced snow.
The temperatures today vary between 15 and 17 degrees Celsius.
Hail is expected in areas of storm, Chrysanthou told CNA.
Police announced in the morning that due to snowfall and dense fog in the Troodos area all roads in the area were slippery and dangerous and open only to 4X4 vehicles.
The Police urge drivers to be especially careful, to drive at low speed, to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead, and to have their vehicle headlights on.
Paphos braces for extreme conditions, Paphos District Government Organization Head Charalambos Pittokopitis told the Cyprus News Agency.
Pittokopitis said that specific areas are constantly monitored for potential flooding. He said that all services are on standby in close cooperation with the local authorities, in order to respond immediately to any unforeseen weather phenomenon.
