UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is holding a decisive meeting, on Wednesday morning, regarding efforts to advance the peace process in Cyprus, jointly with the two leaders, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman.
The meeting is set for 10.00 am (local time) at Nicosia airport in the UN Protected Area and will be followed by a press conference where announcements will be made about the next steps on the Cyprus issue.
The UN chief had a dinner with the leaders on Tuesday evening.
President Christodoulides expressed satisfaction with the discussion that took place and with the fact that the SG is politically committed to the effort for a Cyprus solution.
He said that the meeting covered all issues, substance, methodology, convergences, the awaited expanded meeting and confidence-building measures, and that the discussion will continue this morning, hoping for certain announcements.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
