World Conference of Overseas Cypriots opens on Tuesday in Nicosia

The World Conference of Overseas Cypriots will open on Tuesday evening in Nicosia with addresses by Cyprus’ political and state leadership, representatives of the Cypriot diaspora, Greece and the Church. The conference will run until Friday, July 31.

This year’s gathering takes place at a time of heightened interest in the Cyprus issue, as it coincides with the visit of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Cyprus.

According to the Service for Overseas Cypriots and Repatriated Cypriots of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the opening ceremony will begin at 19.00 local time at The Landmark Nicosia hotel and will be broadcast live by the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC).

Participants will be welcomed by the Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Theodora Constantinidou. On behalf of President Nikos Christodoulides, Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos will deliver the keynote address before officially declaring the conference open.

Addresses will also be delivered by Greece’s Deputy Foreign Minister responsible for Greeks Abroad, Ioannis-Michail Loverdos, and House of Representatives President Annita Demetriou.

Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus will also address the opening ceremony.

Greetings will further be delivered by World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) President Christos Karaolis, PSEKA President Philip Christopher and Youth of Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK) President Christos Touton.

This year’s conference carries particular significance as it marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK), honouring the organisation’s longstanding contribution to maintaining the ties between the Cypriot diaspora and their homeland.

At the same time, this year’s gathering includes the Global Conference of the Youth of Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK). Elections for the new Central Council of NEPOMAK will be held during the conference, underscoring the continuity and active participation of the younger generation of the Cypriot diaspora.

The World Conference of Overseas Cypriots is the principal institutional forum bringing together the Republic of Cyprus and the organised Cypriot diaspora. It aims to strengthen cooperation, preserve the diaspora’s links with Cyprus and promote shared national objectives through the active participation of overseas Cypriot organisations and the younger generation of Cypriots abroad.
