The Eastern Province is set to make badminton history by hosting more than 1,000 national ranking players at the EPBA All Island Open Badminton Championships 2026, which will be held from September 22 to 28 at the Mc Heyzer Indoor Stadium in Trincomalee.
Sanctioned by Sri Lanka Badminton (SLB) as a Level 1 National Ranking Tournament, the seven-day championship has attracted an impressive 1,018 entries, bringing together some of Sri Lanka’s leading badminton players across the Junior, Open and Veteran categories.
The tournament carries a total cash prize pool of Rs. 750,000, adding further significance to what is expected to be one of the biggest badminton events ever staged in the Eastern Province.
The large participation is also expected to create a significant economic impact on Trincomalee, with hundreds of players accompanied by families, coaches and supporters. Hotels, restaurants, retail outlets and transport service providers in the area are expected to benefit from the increased influx of visitors during the championship.
The landmark tournament is organised by the Eastern Province Badminton Association (EPBA) under the leadership of Tournament Director Aliyar Faizer and Deputy Tournament Director S. Stanly Prashanth.
The event has also received important grassroots support from Trincomalee’s Spartan Badminton Academy, contributing to the development and promotion of badminton in the Eastern Province.
The EPBA All Island Open Badminton Championships 2026 is expected to provide a valuable platform for Sri Lanka’s emerging junior players, established national-ranked competitors and veteran athletes to compete at a high level while further strengthening the sporting profile of Trincomalee and the Eastern Province.
