AI, geopolitics are changing global power

States are preparing for conflicts fought with drones, cyber weapons and Artificial Intelligence (AI). But another strategic battlefield is emerging in plain sight: the system that feeds us. For generations, national power has been measured through armies, economies, energy reserves and technology. We may soon have to add another test: whether a State can feed its population when the international system begins to fracture.

Food is moving from the margins of national security to the centre of geopolitics. War is disrupting grain and fertiliser routes. Climate change is pressuring agriculture and water. AI is transforming farming, logistics, intelligence and forecasting. Many countries remain dependent on distant suppliers for wheat, fertiliser, fuel, seeds and agricultural technology.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine showed how quickly a battlefield can reach kitchens thousands of miles away. When Black Sea shipping was disrupted in 2022, global grain markets tightened and import-dependent States across Africa and the Middle East felt the shock.

The Black Sea Grain Initiative later moved more than 32m tonnes of grain and foodstuffs before ending in 2023 (United Nations). The lesson here is that a country does not need to be invaded for war to reach its food system.

The Red Sea crisis reinforced that point. Shipping diversions around the Cape of Good Hope increased journey times, fuel costs and insurance bills, while UN Trade and Development recorded a sharp fall in Suez Canal traffic. Disruption to maritime chokepoints can translate directly into higher costs for food, energy and agricultural inputs.

Climate change deepens the risk. Droughts, floods, extreme heat and changing rainfall are already affecting food production and prices.

After five consecutive below-average rainy seasons, prolonged drought in the Horn of Africa left millions acutely food insecure according to reports from World Food Programme. Climate change does not automatically cause conflict, but it can magnify tensions over land, water, livelihoods and public resources.

Now AI is entering this unstable landscape. Used well, it could become a powerful tool against hunger. It can detect crop disease, improve irrigation, forecast yields, monitor logistics and identify food-safety risks. Yet the same technology can expose vulnerabilities.

By combining satellite imagery, shipping data, crop forecasts, commodity prices and port activity, AI can reveal which ports handle most grain imports, which roads are critical to distribution, which fertiliser suppliers are hardest to replace and where shortages would create the greatest political pressure. What was once agricultural analysis is becoming strategic intelligence.

There is another danger: perception. A fabricated video alleging contamination at a food-processing plant, amplified by fake laboratory reports and automated social-media accounts, could trigger panic buying even if supplies remained intact. In the age of generative AI, trust itself is becoming critical infrastructure.

For Africa, these converging pressures demand a new approach. The continent has enormous agricultural potential, yet many economies remain exposed to imported fertiliser, fuel, machinery and staple foods. The answer is not isolation or complete self-sufficiency. It is resilience.

African governments should build what might be called food intelligence: a capability combining agricultural forecasts, climate data, commodity prices, port information, food-safety surveillance, security analysis and supply-chain mapping. AI can help identify threats before they become crises.

Governments should know which commodities are indispensable, where single points of failure lie, how long reserves would last if a port closed and which alternative suppliers or corridors could be activated. The African Union and East African Community should develop shared early-warning systems and emergency supply protocols.

This is ultimately about deterrence as much as preparedness. A country with diversified suppliers, secure infrastructure, trusted regulators and reserves is harder to coerce. War, climate change and AI are not creating three separate security problems. They are converging within the same system, and food lies at the intersection.

The states that understand this early will invest not only in weapons, but in resilient ports, farms, laboratories, data systems and supply chains.

Those that do not may discover that sovereignty in the 21st century means more than defending borders. The strategic question is brutally simple: can you still feed your people when the world around you is breaking?
