City Oilers have parted ways with head coach Andrew Tendo, bringing an end to a coaching association that has spanned more than a decade.
The Ugandan basketball giants announced Tendo’s departure in a tribute posted on their social media platforms Friday morning, thanking him for his service and describing his contribution as part of the club’s lasting legacy.
‘More than a decade of dedication, three seasons at the helm, and a legacy that will forever be part of the Oilers story. Thank you, Coach Tendo, for your service,’ the club stated.
Tendo spent nine seasons as the Oilers’ first assistant coach before taking over from Mandy Juruni as head coach in 2023.
His elevation to the top job marked the continuation of a long association with a club that has established itself as Uganda’s dominant force in basketball in the last two decades.
He has held the head coach position for the last three seasons, winning one championship before falling to the Namuwongo Blazers in back to back seasons.
The Oilers’ decision comes after a season in which Tendo once again fell to the Blazers in a pulsating seven-game series, losing 4-3 to go empty-handed for the second straight season.
His departure brings to a close a significant chapter for both the coach and the club, with Tendo having been part of the Oilers setup through several seasons of success and growth.
He played and captained Oilers before joining the coaching set up as assistant coach and eventually taking on the head coach role.
The club has not yet announced his replacement but it is expected that Juruni, who is back home after sometime away coaching in Rwanda, will be appointed to take the team back to winning ways.
