THANE, INDIA. Uganda’s unbeaten run on the Mumbai Tour finally ended in dramatic fashion after SoBo Mumbai Falcons edged the Cricket Cranes by one wicket in a tense low-scoring T20 contest on Tuesday.
The difference ultimately came down to experience, composure and tiny moments.
Mumbai domestic all-rounder Akash Parkar survived a controversial caught-behind appeal before anchoring the Falcons chase with an unbeaten 36 off 40 balls as the hosts crawled to 118 for nine with five deliveries remaining.
Uganda had looked beaten much earlier after collapsing to 112 all out in just 17.2 overs, but the bowlers nearly produced one of the side’s best defensive displays of the tour.
Sight of promise
Former Uganda U-19 captain Gerald Olipa had earlier rescued the innings with a sparkling 52 off 30 balls after Uganda slumped to 10 for two inside two overs on a difficult Dadoji Konddev surface offering turn and uneven bounce.
Olipa’s innings, filled with crisp boundaries and fearless strokeplay, gave Uganda something to defend against a Falcons side containing several players with elite Mumbai domestic experience.
The Falcons initially appeared comfortable at 68 for four before Uganda’s bowlers triggered a collapse that stunned the home crowd.
Henry Ssenyondo, Juma Miyaji, Cosmas Kyewuta and Joseph Baguma all picked up two wickets apiece as Uganda reduced the hosts to 98 for nine and moved within touching distance of an unlikely victory.
Captain’s innings
However, Parkar’s calmness under pressure proved decisive.
Coach Steve Tikolo later lamented costly missed opportunities in the field.
‘We put down two catches,’ Tikolo said.
‘One at point (by Ronald Lutaaya) and the left-hander went on to score extra runs. The second one (by Charles Musemeza at the boundary) would have won us the match. Catches win matches.’
Uganda also believed they had removed Parkar behind the wicket off spinner Baguma, only for the appeal to be rejected.
Olipa admitted the moment proved painful in hindsight.
‘We all felt we had him caught behind,’ Olipa said. ‘But the wicket was difficult and the opposition was strong too.’
Uganda captain Fred Achelam nevertheless praised the team’s competitiveness against experienced opposition.
‘112 is not a big score but we made a fist of the fight,’ Achelam said.
‘The guys fought to the very end against good players who have earned stripes in the Ranji Trophy.’
The defeat was Uganda’s first on tour after sweeping MCA Colts XI 4-0 in the preceding 50-over series and Uganda will look to bounce back against MCA Colts XI tomorrow Wednesday, May 27.
