The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Butambala District has further remanded former Butambala County MP Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi to August 14 as it considers his bail application in a case where he is accused of inciting violence and managing an unlawful society.
Kivumbi, 52, appeared before Magistrate Aminah Wahab on Tuesday amid tight security as court checked on the progress of police investigations into the charges against him.
Prosecution alleges that on July 9, 2026, Kivumbi, who is also the National Unity Platform deputy president for Buganda Region, addressed a public gathering where he allegedly incited members of the public to be violent against the government. He is also accused of managing an unlawful society at Bugoye Village in Gombe Ward, Butambala District.
Kivumbi denied the charges and applied for bail, presenting four sureties, including NUP acting president John Baptist Nambeshe, Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake and his sister, Mastulah Nalutaaya.
Magistrate Wahab adjourned the matter to August 14 when she is expected to deliver a ruling on the bail application.
During Tuesday’s proceedings, prosecution, represented by Ms Rachel Bikhole, also asked court to restrict journalists from broadcasting live in the courtroom during the proceedings.
Kivumbi’s latest court appearance follows his arrest after he was intercepted at a roadblock in Mpigi District by armed security personnel. His whereabouts were reportedly unknown for several weeks before he was taken to Nateete Police Station and later transferred to Butambala, where he was produced in court.
The circumstances surrounding his arrest have drawn attention from his supporters and opposition politicians, who have demanded clarity on his detention and access to due process.
Earlier case
This is Kivumbi’s second stint in custody this year. He was arrested in January and charged in connection with allegations arising from the death of more than seven people at his home in Butambala and the destruction of public property.
