The Uganda Volleyball Cranes suffered a major setback in their quest to qualify for the 2026 CAVB Nations Championship after falling 3-0 to regional rivals Kenya in a highly anticipated clash at a packed Lugogo Indoor Stadium on Wednesday night.
With both sides entering the contest unbeaten, expectations were high for a fiercely contested battle.
However, Kenya’s Wafalme Stars produced a disciplined and clinical performance to silence the home crowd and strengthen their grip on the sole qualification slot available from the tournament.
Uganda struggled to find rhythm throughout the match, with poor passing, costly service errors and ineffective net defence undermining their efforts.
Kenya capitalized on every weakness, controlling the tempo from the opening whistle and denying the hosts any sustained momentum.
The visitors made a strong start, targeting Uganda’s reception line with aggressive serving that repeatedly troubled Duke Kyomukama, Gideon Angiro and libero Emmanuel Elanyu.
Uganda’s inability to produce quality passes disrupted setter combinations and limited attacking options, allowing Kenya to organize effectively at the net.
Kenya’s dominance was evident in the opening set as they steadily built a lead before cruising to a comfortable 25-17 victory.
Seeking a response, Uganda head coach Shilla Omuriwe turned to her bench early in the second set. George Aporu replaced Gideon Angiro, while Daudi Okello came on for Muhammed Iga in an attempt to inject energy into the side.
Later, Owen Muzafaru was introduced in the middle for Bernard Malinga as Uganda searched for solutions.
The substitutions helped Uganda become more competitive, but Kenya remained composed under pressure.
Middle blocker Brian Kamonde continued to cause problems with his floating serves, while his counterpart Levis Ogutu proved unstoppable in attack.
The second set developed into a closely fought contest, with Uganda matching Kenya point for point for long stretches.
Roared on by the home supporters, the Cranes appeared poised to level the match, but Kenya held their nerve in the closing stages to edge the set 26-24.
With their backs against the wall, the hosts mounted another spirited challenge in the third set.
Yet Kenya’s superior execution at critical moments once again made the difference. Captain Brian Melly expertly distributed the ball, connecting effectively with attackers Nicholas Matui and Denis Ireke, whose powerful hitting repeatedly breached Uganda’s defence.
Despite fighting hard to stay in contention, Uganda could not overturn the deficit as Kenya sealed the third set 25-22 to complete a convincing straight-sets victory.
The result leaves Kenya firmly in control of the qualification race, maintaining their unbeaten record and moving a step closer to securing a place at the continental championship.
However, the Wafalme Stars still have fixtures against South Sudan and Burundi to navigate before qualification can be confirmed.
For Uganda, the defeat was their first of the tournament and significantly complicates their qualification hopes.
The Cranes must now regroup quickly and finish their campaign strongly when they face Tanzania on Thursday evening.
Earlier in the day, Burundi enjoyed a successful outing as both their men’s and women’s teams registered straight-set victories over South Sudan.
