Gov Oyebanji backs Ikogosi Road Race to drive youth empowerment

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to grassroots development by endorsing the 2026 Ikogosi 17.5km Road Race, highlighting the event as a major catalyst for youth empowerment and local economic growth.

Scheduled for October 31, the marathon will run from the scenic town of Ilawe to the iconic Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort.

The governor’s backing underscores a broader strategy to utilize sports as a tool for creating tangible opportunities.

Organizers anticipate the event will provide an immediate economic boost for local artisans, hoteliers, transport operators, and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs).

Additionally, young people are expected to gain hands-on experience in event management, hospitality, logistics, and media.

In a bid to encourage homegrown talent, the organizers-in partnership with the Ikogosi Marathon Initiative-have introduced a special incentive for the first Ekiti-born athlete to cross the finish line, provided they place within the top 10.

Femi Abegunde, initiator of the marathon, praised the governor’s steadfast support. ‘The governor’s consistent backing of the marathon reflects a broader vision to use athletics not just as recreation, but as a strategic platform for youth empowerment, economic growth, and state branding,’ Abegunde noted.

Beyond athletics, the race serves as a strategic platform to showcase Ekiti’s natural endowments and its readiness for global tourism and investment.
