Gianni Infantino will seek another term in office as FIFA President despite mounting pressure from multiple football confederations.
The 56-year-old administrator’s reelection message was conveyed by a FIFA spokesperson despite recent turn of events.
Infantino sparked global outrage for his proposal to sell minority stakes in FIFA’s tournaments to a private investor.
He was also accused of multiple breach of trust by Europe, Asia, and the North and Central America football confederations, and several countries have dropped their support of his candidacy with just over six months to the next election. Despite the backlash and withdrawal of support, FIFA has revealed that the former Secretary General will vie for a fourth term in office.
‘The FIFA president announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027,’ the statement stated.
‘Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election.’
Infantino has been a divisive figure at the Zurich-based organization in recent months, and his position unraveled on the eve of the 2026 FIFA World Cup where participating countries, staff, and players had issues entering two of the three co-hosting nations USA and Canada.
Infantino became president in 2016 and is in his 11th year in office following reelection victories in 2019 and 2023.
