The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed by the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has assured the International Republican Institute (IRI) Pre-election Assessment Mission that they are fully ready to participate in the 2027 general elections.
This was disclosed by the National Chairman of the party, Abdulrahman Mohammed, when the IRI team visited the National Headquarters of the party, Wadata Plaza on Monday.
Speaking during the meeting, Mohammed said the PDP remains committed to credible, free and fair elections and ready to ensure that the electorate played a decisive role in determining the kind of leadership they want.
He said the outcome of the Osun State governorship election at the weekend was a pointer to the capacity of Nigerian voters to choose their leaders.
‘We are Peoples Democratic Party, and we belong to the people of Nigeria. Our yearning and aspiration is to give responsibility to the electorate,’ he said.
Mohammed added that the PDP had remained a democratic party with structures across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as the 774 local government areas.
He assured the IRI mission that the party was fully prepared for the 2027 elections and would provide further details on its strategy and preparations during their engagement.
Speaking earlier, the IRI African Regional Director, Jenai Cox disclosed that the mission was in Nigeria to engage a broad range of stakeholders and assess the political environment and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
She said the team would examine the preparations being made by political parties and identify issues that would require attention ahead of the elections.
Cox explained that the mission would assess the political situation, preparations for the elections and the activities of political parties, while seeking the perspectives of different stakeholders.
She disclosed that the mission would share recommendations with stakeholders at the end of its assessment, with a preliminary statement expected later in the week.
