The death of Dotun Oladipo, the publisher of The Eagle Online, on August 25, 2026, came as a rude shock. When the sad news story reached me at about 10.45 pm on August 26, 2026, I could not believe it. I never thought he would die so soon, especially since we used to chat on WhatsApp every Sunday.
He was a brilliant, humble and patriotic veteran Nigerian Journalist whom I respected deeply. It is heartbreaking that death took his life so suddenly at the age of 56.
He played a major role during the burial of my late mother, Mrs Risikat Jimoh, who died on July 16, 2026, by giving her burial media coverage. He also commiserated with me when I broke the news of my mother’s death to him.
He called me and sent a condolence message on WhatsApp, saying, ‘Eeya. May her soul rest in peace. Accept my sincere condolences, sir.’ I replied to him by saying, ‘Thank you very much, sir. E maa pe fun wa, sir.’ I was very sad.
I am a writer for The Eagle online media outlet, which has published several of my articles that are still online today.
I was planning to pay him a visit in Lagos State so as to thank him face-to-face for everything he has done for me, but it is a pity that his burial programme is what I will now attend in Lagos State, and the said burial is slated for September 10 and 11, 2026.
Therefore, I write to express my sincere condolences to his wife, Madam Taiwo Oladipo, and his children, including the journalists who are working with The Eagle online media outlet.
The passing of Dotun Oladipo is a heavy loss to his immediate family members and Nigeria at large. May his soul rest in sweet repose.
Let me also use this medium to urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to use his good office to immortalise the late Dotun Oladipo so as to recognise the lasting legacy that he left behind.
