Enugu State Government has said the combined 19,000 housing units were expected to help address the state’s housing shortage and reduce the cost of accommodation.
The approval was granted during the State Executive Council meeting, in Enugu
According to the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ben Okoh, 1,000 fully detached terrace houses would be constructed as part of the first phase of the housing development around the New Enugu City project.
The units will comprise four-bedroom and five-bedroom homes.
Okoh said the housing project would complement the 6.5-kilometre dual carriageway already completed for the first phase of New Enugu City, alongside ongoing internal road construction.
The government is also developing an additional 18,000 mass housing units at Gateway Estate in Enugu.
According to the commissioner, the estate would be supported by essential infrastructure, including roads, water supply and electricity, to create a fully serviced residential community.
The SEC also approved the immediate commencement of the 10.5-kilometre Igogoro-Amachara-Ikpamodo-Okpo-Amaada Road project.
Intervention works were also approved for flood-prone sections of major roads in Nsukka.
The works will include the construction of five adjoining streets, rehabilitation of damaged drainage systems and clearing of blocked drains to tackle recurring flooding.
The council further approved the procurement of more than 30 pieces of light equipment for the Ministry of Works.
The equipment will support direct labour projects, emergency interventions and routine road maintenance across the state, with the government expecting the investment to reduce maintenance and emergency response costs.
