JUST IN: Again, Court gives Nnamdi Kanu till Nov 7 to defend terrorism charges

Justice James Omotosho of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has again given the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, till November 7, 2025, to defend the terrorism charges brought against him by the federal government or waive his right to do so.

This is as Kanu stood his ground in the open court on Wednesday, that there were no valid terrorism charges against him and would offer no defence to the one against him by the federal government.

Justice Omotosho, who offered Kanu another opportunity, said he granted the fresh opportunity to the defendant in the interest of justice and to the nation.

At Wednesday’s proceedings, when Kanu was called to open his defence, instead of doing so, the IPOB leader faulted the charges, insisting that he had nothing to defend in respect of a repealed law.

Rather than responding to the business of the day, he took hours addressing the court on why the charges against him cannot stand.

Among others, he said, the Supreme Court in the judgment that ordered his trial made it abundantly clear to the federal government to amend the charge because the one against him had been repealed.

Kanu said that up till now, the charge had not been amended by the prosecution, thereby violating the order of the apex court.

The IPOB leader persistently insisted that the refusal of the federal government to amend the charge was fatal to his trial, adding that no trial can hold in a repealed law.

Kanu said, ‘The Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act has been repealed. I cannot put in defence under a repealed law. I won’t do that.’

At this point, Justice Omotosho reminded him of the need to keep his gun powder dry, but he declined, maintaining he had not seen any reason to open defence in the instant charge.

At a point, he agreed to open up the defence and that he would need to consult with his four legal consultants.

He named Nnaemeka Ejiofor, Aloy Ejimakor, Maxwell Okpara and Mandela Umegborogu as his four legal consultants to consult.

Based on this, the Judge repeated his plea to him to consult with legal practitioners conversant with criminal laws to aid his defence.

Earlier, counsel to the federal government, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, had requested the Judge to stand on the order of the court that Kanu should open defence or waive his right to do so.

Justice Omotosho, however, said he was inclined to bend backwards again to give Kanu another opportunity to have a rethink to open defence or forget it.

The IPOB leader has been in detention since he was brought back to Nigeria from Kenya in June 2021 under controversial circumstances.

Don urges action over abuse of Information Technology

A university lecturer, Prof Virginia Ejiofor has expressed concerns over increasing abuse of Information Technology (IT) particularly among youths, calling for collective actions to fight the trend.

She said amidst the abuse, IT had however remained great tool for advancement which must continuously be harnessed for ultimum satisfaction.

Ejiofor, professor of computer science spoke at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra state while delivering the 115th Inaugural Lecture themed, ‘Information Technology, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’

Describing IT as double-edged sword – a tool for advancement and potential weapon for harm, the varsity don stressed that realizing such duality was key to shaping a digital future for the collective benefits of all and sundry.

According to her, IT had not only enhanced communication and advanced healthcare, education, agriculture and business, it has equally improved governance and public service as well as increased career opportunities for the youths.

‘The positive impacts of information technology on economic growth, education, governance and global connectivity is undeniable and has shaped a more interconnected, efficient world,’ she added.

Ejiofor however listed negative sides of IT as cyber security threats, privacy concerns, digital divide, job displacement, misinformation and fake news, cybercrime syndicates, cyber bullying and online harassment, addiction and mental health issues, among others.

‘The accompanying risks from cyber attacks and data breaches to ethical abuses and societal disruptions cannot be ignored.

‘Even more alarming are the deliberate exploitations of IT for criminal and harmful activities that threaten societal trusts and security,’ she added.

While calling on individuals, organizations and governments to take advantage of immense opportunities offered by IT, the varsity don urged the bodies to remain vigilant, foster digital responsibility and implement effective policies that mitigate risks.

‘The future of IT will depend on our collective ability to harness its good, confront its bad and guard against its ugly sides.’

On the forthcoming Anambra governorship election, Ejiofor warned against misinformation, disinformation and fake news, stressing the need for verification before acceptance.

‘Electorate must carefully verify every information that comes their way before accepting it as true and possibly sharing to others,’ she said.

Anambra guber: IPAC vows to tackle vote buying, violence

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) said it was battle-ready to stop vote buying, intimidation and violence on Anambra State’s November 8, 2025, governorship election.

According to the leadership of the INEC, recognised voice to the people, voters and party agents were determined to work together to ensure that the poll was credible, free and fair as promised by the electoral umpire.

The National Chairman of IPAC, Dr Yusuf M. Dantalle, who stated this at stakeholders’ engagement and voter sensitisation press conference at Awka, on Tuesday, urged voters to come out en masse and elect the candidate of their choice without fear or favour.

Dantalle, represented by the IPAC National Publicity Secretary and National Woman leader of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Mrs Oge Chinyere Kalu, said he was sure that votes would count and be protected.

According to him, IPAC would provide necessary support to INEC to ensure that the poll was credible and fair because voting without inducements or intimidation would promote good governance and strengthen democracy.

He, however, urged the candidates and political parties to maintain issue-based campaigns, sensitise the electorate’s and allow their will to prevail at the end because leadership, according to him, should be earned through ballots, not coercion or manipulation.

‘Election is not war. It is a democratic contest of ideas and vision. Therefore, everyone must prioritise issue-based campaigns, maturity, tolerance and sportsmanship. We must place. Anambra’s interest is above personal ambition. We must reject hate speech, incitement or any act that could undermine Anambra’s peace and unity. All the stakeholders are invited to make the election credible, responsive and secure,’ he added.

The IPAC National boss also enjoined the electoral umpire to strictly adhere to the Electoral Act 2022, INEC guidelines and constitutional provisions for neutrality, inclusivity, transparency and professionalism to guarantee a level playing.

Also speaking, the National Chairman of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) and IPAC Director-General, Dr Prince Chinedu Obi, described the briefing as a tradition to sensitise stakeholders during elections so as to empower them to mobilise members and supporters towards a successful poll.

Earlier speaking, the State Chairman of IPAC and ZLP, Comrade Uchenna Ugwuorji, thanked the national leadership, assuring that they would vote and mobilise team members to vote wisely on the election day.

Agege legislative council confirms Obasa as chairman after Azeez’s resignation

The 10th Assembly of the Agege Legislative Council, led by Hon. Adeshina Haruna, on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Hon. Tunde Azeez Disco as Chairman of Agege Local Government, paving the way for a new leadership structure in the council.

Azeez stepped down citing health challenges that had hindered his ability to perform his duties.

The councillors commended his service and wished him a speedy recovery.

Following deliberations, the council unanimously approved Hon. AbdulGaniyu Vinod Obasa as the substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government. The decision was described as key to ensuring continuity, stability, and effective governance in the council.

During the plenary session, lawmakers also carried out a strategic review of the council’s committee system and oversight functions, with emphasis on strengthening transparency, accountability, and project monitoring across the local government.

The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to delivering development-driven initiatives to residents of Agege under its renewed leadership and legislative oversight framework.

Speaking with The Nation, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Agege, Rotimi Sulaiman, hailed the transition, describing Azeez’s resignation as a thoughtful move.

‘Hon. Tunde Azeez has been long sick and his decision to resign and devote his attention to his health rather than being weighed down by the responsibility of that office is the wise decision any sane person should take,’ he said.

He also praised Obasa, noting that ‘the beneficiary of that excellent decision, Abdulganiyu Vinod Obasa, is a visionary young man who in the last few months of Azeez’s absence has demonstrated uncommon capacity. I think Agege is lucky to have both men.’

Tiwa Savage speaks on why she’s open to being second wife

Nigerian singer, Tiwatope Omolara Savage, popularly known as Tiwa Savage, has spoken about her viral statement on being open to becoming a second wife, explaining the feelings behind her comment.

In a recent interview, the 45-year-old stated that her remark was born out of personal experiences and heartbreak, rather than a genuine desire to be anyone’s second wife.

She reflected on her past marriage, saying:

‘I was a first wife, where did that get me? I got married as the only wife, but here we are. I’m tired of being heartbroken; maybe I’m getting it wrong. Maybe I should try being a second wife.’

Tiwa clarified that her statement was not a reflection of her actual wishes but rather an expression of frustration.

‘It’s not my choice, though. I don’t want to. I wish I could tell my truth, but I will be dragged,’ she added.

Tiwa Savage was married to music executive Tunji Balogun, known as TBillz, from 2013 to 2018, and they share a son together before their marriage ended amid mutual accusations of infidelity and emotional strain.

Sowore files ?500m suit against Police, IGP, Lagos Commissioner

A Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos has received a ?500 million fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, against the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, over alleged violation of his fundamental rights.

In an affidavit of urgency personally deposed to by him, Sowore stated that on November 3, 2025, the Lagos Commissioner of Police publicly declared him ‘wanted’ in the media without any prior invitation, arrest warrant, or formal charge against him.

In the suit filed before the court, Sowore is asking the court to enforce his rights to dignity, personal liberty, and freedom of movement as enshrined in Sections 34, 35, 39, 40, 41, and 46 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as well as Articles 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, and 12 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The lawsuit, filed by a team of human rights lawyers including Tope Temokun, Marshal Abubakar, Inibehe Effiong, A.E. Adegoroye, Moshood Shittu, Deji Adeyanju, O.D. Olatunde, and I.E. Osunyikanmi, follows a public declaration by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police on November 3, 2025, naming Sowore as a ‘wanted person.’

The motion, brought pursuant to Order of the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules 2009, seeks several urgent reliefs, including: ‘AN ORDER granting LEAVE to the Applicant to serve the originating processes in this suit and the hearing notices for the court sittings, on the 2nd and 3rd Respondents, by substituted means, to wit; By serving the 2nd and 3rd Respondents, through the 3rd Respondent’s state command i.e. the office of the 1st Respondent, the commissioner of police of Lagos State, lagos State Police Command. Ikeja, by delivering to the said state command i.c. .the office of the 1st Respondent, each copy of the originating processes and/or hearing notices meant for each of the gnd and 3rd Respondents.

‘An order of interim injunction restraining the Respondents, , particularly the 1 Respondent, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, whether by themselves, their servants, agents, officers, or privies, from harassing and/or intimidating and/or threatening with arrest and/or arresting and/or further declaring, representing, or in any manner portraying the Applicant as a ‘wanted person’ or fugitive, pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice.

‘An order of interim stay of operation and action on the effect of the public declaration made by the 1st Respondent, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, describing or declaring the Applicant, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, as a ‘wanted person’, pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice.

‘AND FOR SUCH FURTHER ORDER OR ORDERS as this Honourable Court may deem fit to make in the circumstance.’

Sowore deposed that he had not been served with any formal police invitation or warrant of arrest, adding that his constitutional rights to dignity, liberty, and free movement had been severely impaired by the actions of the police.

The activist, who described himself as a law-abiding citizen, emphasised that if he had been invited for any lawful investigation, he would have honoured such invitation.

He argued that the declaration by the Lagos Police Commissioner unlawfully tainted his reputation as a respected journalist and former presidential candidate, noting that it was intended to stifle his freedom and silence his activism.

Sowore urged the court to restrain the police and their agents from further harassing, intimidating, or arresting him, and to set aside the public declaration labeling him as a wanted person.

The Affidavit Of Urgency reads: ‘That unless restrained urgently by this Honourable Court, the Respondents will continue to threaten and harass me everywhere I go.

‘That I am not also aware of any offences committed by me and neither have I been extended any prior invitation before the 1st Respondent’s declaration on the 3rd day of November, 2025.

‘That I am a law abiding citizen and if extended invitation by the 1st Respondent for a crime known to law, I would have honoured such invitation.

‘That I am a person of high repute, being a human right activist, journalist, pro-democracy campaigner, and former presidential candidate in this country and the declaration of the 1st Respondent declaring me as a ‘wanted’ criminal unlawfully taints my reputation and dignity contrary to my social status and that if unchecked or unrestrained now, the 1st Respondent and the 2nd and 3rd Respondents will give effect to a declaration I am still challenging here and stifle my freedom of movement and my right to personal liberty will be taken away,

‘That since service is fundamental to the jurisdiction of the court, and difficulty in service of processes and hearing notices might delay this case, it has become necessary to depose to the urgency of this matter as I scek leave of this Honourable Court to grant me leave to the applicant to serve the originating processes on the 2nd and 3rd respondents through the mode sought on the motion paper.

‘That it is in the interest of justice to grant this application.

‘That I depose to this affidavit in good faith, contentiously believing same to be true and in accordance with the Oaths Act.’

UNICEF advocates construction of toilets in public places

United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has demanded more action from governments at all levels to initiate and enforce policies towards the provision of Water Sanitation and Hygiene facilities across public places in the country.

The organisation explained that this measure would go a long way in putting an end to open defecation and ensuring healthy living for the people especially those in the urban areas.

The UNICEF, Lagos Office WASH Specialist, Monday Johnson stated this on Tuesday during a two-day media dialogue on Accelerating Actions to improve Urban Water, Sanitation and Hygiene(WASH) in Nigeria organized by the Oyo State Ministry of Information in collaboration with UNICEF taking place in Ilaji hotels and resort, Akanran road, Ona-Ara Local Government Area of Oyo.

Johnson who commended some state governments for having updated WASH policies, solicited the support of all stakeholders including the media in a bid to achieve Sustainable Development Goal six in ensuring clean water and sanitation for all by 2030.

According to him, ‘Increasing urbanization across many states in Nigeria, is outpacing the expansion of sanitation infrastructure. Overcrowded urban slums with limited space, inadequate containment systems, and poor access to safely managed sanitation services are exacerbating open defecation and environmental health risks

‘ We must understand and agree that more people are moving into the urban cities and areas, thereby stressing the available sanitation and water hygiene facilities; the urban areas are already overwhelmed with more people and fewer facilities for them to use.

‘ The urban areas are growing fast and will not have the WASH facilities to take care of the people coming into the locations, especially looking at the projected rise in population by the year 2050.

‘ There is a need for the government of all levels, especially states to start coming up with policies and funding to address the gaps because it is obvious we can’t stop migration. Also, there is a need for engagement and partnership with the private sector.

‘ The overall status of the WASH sector in Nigeria is low. Only 10% of the population has access to complete basic water sanitation and hygiene services. Those living in rural areas are three times more disadvantaged than those in urban areas.

‘ It must be stated that the driver of healthy living is the availability of good WASH facilities, hence the need for us to play our roles in accelerating the advocacy for these facilities.

Referencing Ekiti State as one of the states with an updated WASH policy and revealing specific ways government can use policies to ensure compliance, Johnson added, ‘ One of the things our government can do is ensure all filling stations and markets have complete and clean WASH facilities for people to use and discourage open defecation

‘ Don’t forget it is the right of every citizen to have access to adequate and clean WASH facilities.’

Johnson stressed that improving sanitation and hygiene behaviour is critical not only to public health but also to poverty reduction.

The UNICEF’s Communication Officer, Lagos Field Office, Blessing Ejiofor said the dialogue became necessary to build the capacity of media practitioners in using their platforms to advocate for a better society with improved WASH services.

She also emphasised that access to water, sanitation, and hygiene is a fundamental human right, calling for stronger commitment and action from both the government and the citizens.

In his goodwill message, the Director of Community Mobilisation and Hygiene Education, Oyo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (OYORUWASSA), Adegoke Ayodele, highlighted progress made in the state through sustained efforts on WASH programmes, describing them as ‘success stories that must be built upon.’

On her part, the Program Officer at the Oyo State Ministry of Information, Mrs. Adeola Adewole, urged journalists to use their platforms to advocate improved sanitation practices and policies across Nigeria.

FG to demolish, rebuild 3 spans of Iddo Bridge in Lagos

The Federal Government will demolish and rebuild three major spans of the Iddo Bridge in Lagos, which has suffered structural damage from a fire caused by illegal occupants and repeated collisions with trucks.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs Olukorede Kesha, stated this on Wednesday while briefing newsmen at the bridge site in Lagos.

She said the repair which was part of the Federal Government’s plan to address structural defects and restore the bridge to a safe and durable state, would last about three months.

According to her, heavy and articulated vehicles will be restricted from using the bridge beginning from next weekend, to allow for the installation of height barriers and the commencement of the repair work.

She said after that, on Nov. 22, demolition of the bridge deck proper would start.

She said the diversions would start from Apapa bound to Carta Bridge bound and would be counterflow.

‘We are here to inform Lagosians that the Iddo Bridge will soon be closed to articulated vehicles.

‘This restriction is necessary because the bridge has not received proper attention for many years and now requires urgent repairs,’ she said.

Kesha noted that while the demolition and reconstruction would take place in phases, the Apapa-bound section would be the first to be worked on.

She said traffic would be diverted to the Carter Bridge side, with a counterflow arrangement for light vehicles only.

The controller assured that the ministry had held meetings with relevant traffic and security agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the Police, to ensure smooth movement during the construction period.

She urged drivers, especially trailer and truck operators, to comply with diversion signs and use alternative routes through Eko Bridge, Costain, Third Mainland Bridge, and Herbert Macaulay Way.

‘We don’t want accidents. That’s why we are creating awareness early, especially for truck drivers who may not get information through the media,’ Kesha said.

She added that advocacy campaigns would also be taken to garages, parks, and transport unions to ensure widespread awareness of the planned restriction.

Kesha said the project, expected to be completed by early March 2026, was designed to enhance safety and improve traffic flow once fully reopened.
