The third CIS Games, hosted for the first time by Azerbaijan, will conclude on October 8, Azernews reports.

On the final day of competition, the next medalists in rhythmic gymnastics will be determined.

The finals will take place at the Shaki Olympic Sports Complex and will begin at 12:00 .

The closing ceremony of the Games will also take place today. The event will be held at the Ganja Stadium and will start at 19:00.

Since its start on September 26, 1,624 athletes from 13 countries have been competing in the Games.

Azerbaijan is hosting the third Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Games from September 28 to October 8, 2025, marking a significant event in the region’s sports calendar.

This multi-sport competition brings together athletes from CIS member states and invited countries, aiming to promote friendship, cooperation, and athletic excellence.

For the first time in the history of the CIS Games, competitions are being held across seven cities in Azerbaijan: Ganja, Mingachevir, Gabala, Shaki, Goygol, Yevlakh, and Khankandi.

Each city hosts events in different sports, with the second-largest city, Ganja, serving as the main hub and officially designated the CIS Sports Capital for 2025.

Around 23 sports are being contested across 12 venues, highlighting a broad and inclusive athletic program.

A total of 1,624 athletes from 13 countries are participating in the third CIS Games.

Event mascots Babir and Leyla are helping to generate enthusiasm among young fans.

The first international Baku Tango Marathon – a three-day celebration of Argentine tango will take place in Baku from October 17 to 19 at the Dreamland Golf Club, Azernews reports.

The event is organized by the InTango school with the support of the Azerbaijan Dance Union (AzDC).

The founder of the first Argentine tango school in Azerbaijan, InTango, co-founder and chairman of the Argentine Tango Committee of AzDC, international competition laureate, teacher, and tango DJ, Ilham Osmanov, noted that tango is one of the most popular social dances in the world today, and Baku is no exception.

“We are creating this marathon for the music, for communication, and for the special silence between the notes where the dance is born. We want our guests to take home not only beautiful photos but also the feeling of being at home, so that the warmth of our city stays with them for a long time,” said Ilham Osmanov.

The marathon will bring together tangueros from more than 10 countries, including Turkiye, Georgia, Argentina, Italy, and others, making this event a significant contribution to the development of culture, urban tourism, and the international appeal of Azerbaijan.

The program includes performances by six DJs from different countries, each bringing their unique style, while all deeply respect the classical traditions of tango.

To advance the restoration of the splendid Momine Khatun Mausoleum, a masterpiece of Azerbaijani national architecture, the management and experts from Atelier Erich Pummer GmbH have arrived in Nakhchivan, Azernews reports citing Nakhchivan Culture Ministry.

Geo-technical investigations are currently being conducted to study the condition of the ground around the mausoleum.

As a result of the drilling of engineering-geological wells, soil samples, both damaged and undamaged, will be taken and subjected to laboratory tests (granulometric composition, density, moisture, strength limit, consolidation coefficient). This will help determine the level and characteristics of the groundwater.

A technical report reflecting the results of the research and recommendations for ensuring the monument’s stability will be prepared by the company and submitted to the Nakhchivan Culture Ministry.

The Momine Khatun Mausoleum is one of the most distinguished landmarks in Nakhchivan.

Built in 1186 by Ajemi Abubakiroglu, the mausoleum honors Momine Khatun, the wife of Shamsaddin Eldeniz, the founder of the Azerbaijan Atabaylar state.

It is believed that Shamsaddin Eldeniz, Momine Khatun, and their son Mahammad Jahan Pahlavan were buried within the mausoleum, though the headstones in the vault were looted and removed.

The mausoleum is adorned with intricate geometric patterns and verses from the Quran. An inscription in Kufic script on the monument’s arch reads: *”We pass away, but only the wind is left behind us. We die, but only a work is left as a present.”*

The Momine Khatun Mausoleum was likely once part of a madrassa. Drawings and photographs from the nineteenth century suggest it was part of a larger religious and educational complex.

The structure consists of both underground and aboveground sections. Inside the dome, four circular medallions feature the names of the Caliphs.

The interior of the mausoleum is circular in shape, with Momine Khatun’s burial chamber located beneath the building, though access to it is no longer possible.

Four round medallions on the inner side of the dome bear inscriptions with the names of the Prophet Mohammed and the four Rashidun Caliphs-Abu Bakr, Omar, Osman, Ali-as well as his sons Hassan and Hussein.

This exceptional example of Azerbaijani architectural heritage was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List in Need of Urgent Safeguarding on September 30, 1998.

The 12th Summit of the Council of Heads of State of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), held in Gabala, has become a defining moment in the evolution of the Turkic world. Bringing together leaders from across the Turkic geography, the summit not only reaffirmed shared values of history, language, and culture but also underscored a new stage of strategic integration among its member states. The discussions in Gabala highlighted the OTS’s growing role as an influential geopolitical bloc that bridges continents, connects transport corridors, and amplifies the collective economic potential of its members.

President Ilham Aliyev emphasized the unity and growing influence of the Turkic world, noting that, “Today, the Organization of Turkic States has grown into one of the key geopolitical centers, and our shared history, ethnic roots, and languages unite us as one family.” He went on to illustrate the organization’s expanding synergy with a striking analogy: “If the strength of each Turkic state in the OTS is roughly 10, then the combined strength of eight Turkic states is not just 80. Together, they total 800 because their collective power exceeds the simple sum of their parts. This isn’t an exaggeration but a phenomenon grounded in scientific principles.”

MP Vugar Bayramov, in his remarks to Azernews, reflected on the significance of the summit, underscoring how President Aliyev’s vision and the overall outcomes of the meeting demonstrate the OTS’s rise as a major geopolitical force. He stated: “The speech of the Azerbaijani leader once again confirmed the formation of the organization as one of the serious geopolitical centers. As the Azerbaijani head of state noted, internal political and economic stability, significant geostrategic position, positive demographics and a young population, great opportunities in the transport and logistics sector, natural resources, as well as growing potential in the military and military-technical fields make the TEU an important actor in the global arena.”

Bayramov emphasized that the Turkic world today represents a region whose growth rate surpasses the global average: “The further deepening of strategic relations between the TEU member states creates new opportunities for economic development. This is also reflected in the creation of joint investment funds, an increase in mutual trade volumes, and extensive cooperation in the field of transport and logistics. Azerbaijan is a state that makes a special contribution to the strengthening of strategic cooperation and integration between the Turkic states. In recent years, both the deepening of economic cooperation between the Turkic states and the rapid development of their national economies have been recorded.”

In highlighting the economic strength of the Turkic world, he noted that “In 2024, the economy of the Turkic states grew by 5.4 percent. This significantly exceeds the global economic growth rate. The Turkic states, with a GDP of $2.11 trillion, have a 1.8 percent share in the global economy. In 2024, the total trade turnover of the Turkic states amounted to $1.17 trillion, which is 3.5 percent of the global trade turnover. This means that the Turkic world is becoming a new global power.”

Bayramov also drew attention to Azerbaijan’s central role in enhancing the region’s connectivity. “After the victory, President Ilham Aliyev repeatedly stated that the main part of Azerbaijan should be provided with unhindered access to Nakhchivan by land. The President stated that the Zangazur Corridor would be implemented and that it was only a matter of time,” he recalled, emphasizing the corridor’s strategic relevance.

He further noted that, “The Joint Declaration signed in Washington, D.C., which was signed thanks to the far-sighted policy of the President of Azerbaijan, confirmed the unhindered movement between the main part of our country and Nakhchivan. As noted at the Gabala meeting, the Zangazur Corridor is of great importance as a new transport artery and a second route within both the Middle Corridor and the North-South Corridor. This also means that the Turkic world will be connected by land transport in the very near future. The Turkic world is uniting, and it is developing further.”

A delegation led by Speaker of the Croatian Parliament Gordan Jandrokovic, who is on an official visit to Azerbaijan, paid tribute to National Leader Heydar Aliyev at the Alley of Honor in Baku, Azernews reports.

The delegation laid a wreath at Heydar Aliyev’s grave in memory of the architect and founder of the modern independent Azerbaijani state.

Later, the Croatian delegation visited the Alley of Martyrs, where they honored the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for Azerbaijan’s independence and territorial integrity and laid a wreath at the ‘Eternal Torch’ monument.

During the visit, the guests also viewed the panorama of Baku from its highest point and were briefed on the history of the Alley of Martyrs, as well as the city’s ongoing development and reconstruction efforts.

The Draconid meteor shower will be active on October 8-9, Azernews reports.

Department of Astrophysics at Baku State University (BSU) informs that the source of this meteor shower is the 21P/Giacobini-Zinner comet.

Discovered in 1900 by French astronomer Michel Giacobini and re-observed in 1913 by German astronomer Ernst Zinner, this comet orbits the Sun every 6.6 years.

As the comet releases dust and gas during each orbit, which intersects Earth’s orbit, we observe it as a meteor shower.

Unlike other meteor showers, Draconids move very slowly and leave bright, long-lasting trails across the sky. Typically, their activity is low, with around five meteors visible per hour.

The speed of Draconid meteors is quite slow, approximately 20 kilometers per hour.

However, throughout history, the Draconids have occasionally been marked by surprise bursts: for instance, observers recorded thousands of meteors per hour in 1926, 1933, 1946, and 2011.

This year, the peak activity of the Draconid meteor shower is expected to occur on the evening of October 8-9, particularly between 19:30 and 23:00.

On October 7, 2025, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Jordan, in collaboration with the Azerbaijan National Commission for UNESCO and under the patronage of Princess Dana Firas, President of the Petra National Trust and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, hosted the opening of the exhibition “Echoes of the Centuries: Azerbaijani Musical Instruments” in Amman, the capital of Jordan, Azernews reports.

The ceremony was attended by representatives from Jordan’s governmental and cultural institutions, members of the diplomatic corps accredited in the Kingdom, as well as notable figures from the academic and artistic communities, and local public representatives.

In his speech at the opening, Eldar Salimov, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, emphasized that the exhibition was not only an art display but also a reflection of the Azerbaijani people’s spirit, their centuries-old history, and rich cultural heritage. He noted that Azerbaijan’s musical traditions date back to ancient times, including the musical and dance scenes depicted in the rock carvings of Gobustan and Gamygaya.

The Ambassador Salimov further pointed out that Azerbaijani music has always held an important place in the spiritual life of the people, and it is widely reflected in the works of great classical poets such as Nizami Ganjavi and Mohammad Fuzuli, as well as in “Book of Dede Qorqud” epic

He also mentioned prominent figures like Uzeyir Hajibayli, Fikrat Amirov, Gara Garayev, Muslum Magomayev, and other distinguished artists, whose work has played a key role in bridging Eastern and Western cultures.

The Ambassador said that each musical instrument on display-tar, kamancha, nagara, saz, qaval, qanun, oud, tutak, and zurna serves as a living carrier of national memory and is a manifestation of Azerbaijan’s historical and spiritual identity.

Ambassador Salimov also noted that under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijani music culture has entered a new phase of development. He highlighted the restoration of the Kharibulbul Festival in the city of Shusha as a prime example of national cultural revival.

In conclusion, the Ambassador presented the musical instruments and Azerbaijani carpets, which represent the country’s ancient craftsmanship, to the Petra National Trust as an official gift on behalf of the Azerbaijan National Commission for UNESCO.

He described this symbolic gesture as a reflection of Azerbaijan’s contribution to the preservation and promotion of humanity’s shared cultural heritage.

During the event, participants were treated to a performance by Jordan’s “Duroob” group, featuring classical Azerbaijani musical pieces.

Azerbaijani boxers have reached the finals of the European Boxing U19 Championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic, Azernews reports.

On the first day of the semi-finals, two Azerbaijani athletes advanced to the final.

Banuchichak Nasirli (48 kg) defeated Amelja Sula(Italy) in the semi-final with a score of 5:0 (29:26, 29:27, 29:27, 30:25, 30:25). She will face Mathilda Fragnieres (France) in the final.

Bilalhabasi Nazarov (50 kg) tested Razvan Ionut Panaite (Romania).

The Azerbaijani boxer won all three rounds, securing a 5:0 victory (30:27, 30:26, 30:25, 30:25, 30:26). He will meet Tommaso Orlando (Italy) in the final.

The Greeks introduced boxing to the ancient Olympic Games in the late 7th century BC.

In 1924, the International Amateur Boxing Federation (FIBA) was founded, and in 1946, it was renamed the International Boxing Association (AIBA). Boxing made its Olympic debut at the 1904 Games in St. Louis.

Azerbaijan hosted its first boxing championship in 1926, with national boxers claiming first place. Since 1992, the Azerbaijani Boxing Federation has been a full member of AIBA.

Azerbaijani boxers have earned numerous prestigious accolades in international competitions. Aghasi Mammadov made history by becoming Azerbaijan’s first gold medalist at the World Championships. Fuad Asadov also earned a spot on the podium at the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Azerbaijan has been selected several times to host major boxing events.

The country previously hosted the 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championships, which served as the main qualification tournament for the London 2012 Olympics.

In 2019, Baku hosted the AIBA Youth World Championships, marking the first youth competition to act as a qualifier for the 2010 Singapore Olympics.

In accordance with the bilateral military cooperation plan between the Ministries of Defense of Azerbaijan and Georgia for 2025, a delegation from the Georgian Ministry of Defense visited Azerbaijan within the framework of the program ‘Exchange of Experience in the Field of UAVs’, Azernews reports.

According to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense, the Georgian delegation received a detailed briefing on the activities of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the Azerbaijani Army, including their use in combat operations, organization of flight missions, and ongoing development trends in this field.

A trial has been held on the criminal case initiated by the State Security Service (STS) against Khagani Omarov, Anar Salamzadeh, and Elchin Azizov, who are accused of financing terrorism, Azernews reports.

The hearing took place at the Baku Grave Crimes Court under the chairmanship of Judge Nigar Imanova. During the session, the defense submitted a motion requesting the termination of the criminal case against Khagani Omarov.

The court rejected the motion, deeming it unfounded. Subsequently, witnesses gave testimony, and the statements previously provided to the investigation by four individuals involved in the case were read aloud in their absence.

The trial is set to continue on October 28.

It should be noted that the accused were detained as a result of an operation conducted by the State Security Service. The investigation revealed that they had transferred funds to certain individuals operating abroad to support terrorist activities. They were charged under Article 214-1 (financing of terrorism) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
