BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The amount of damage caused by Typhoon Tino to agriculture and infrastructure in Negros Occidental has reached P1.98 billion, according to the provincial disaster risk reduction and management council.
Data from the provincial government showed that Tino’s damage to infrastructure amounted to P1.5 billion, to agriculture and livestock, P303.135 million and to education facilities P172.841 million.
Tino displaced almost one million Negrenses, devastated several local government units in central Negros and killed 96 people, with 40 still missing, according to the Office of Civil Defense.
Winds and flash floods spawned by the typhoon destroyed up to 200,685 houses, with 19,862 beyond repair.
Residents of Hinigaran and Moises Padilla whose homes along riverbanks were swept away by floodwaters may no longer be allowed to return to these areas.
Hinigaran Mayor Mary Grace Arceo said the local government is eyeing an 11-hectare property in Barangay Gargato as a relocation site for more than 200 families.
Another one-hectare property is also being considered as relocation for more than 300 families in Moises Padilla.
Tino destroyed 13 schools, with 1,070 classrooms and 24,779 chairs needing repairs, according to the Department of Education-Schools Division of Negros Occidental.
