Two people died after a magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck off Davao Oriental on Friday morning, according to the province’s 2nd district Rep. Cheeno Miguel Almario.
Among those who died was a person who was struck by a falling hollow block, and a patient who had a cardiac arrest amid the quake. However, only the former casualty was confirmed by the Office of the Civil Defense.
‘As of 10:30 a.m., an earthquake occurred in Davao Oriental along the coast of Manay. So far, we have already recorded two cases of casualties,’ Almario told reporters on Friday.
‘One is an elderly person who is currently confined at the Davao Oriental Medical Center after the earthquake had a cardiac arrest due to panic, and another 54-year-old lady fell against a wall and also died,’ he added.
INQUIRER.net had already asked the OCD for confirmation regarding the second casualty, but it has yet to reply as of posting time. A total of 213 aftershocks have been recorded following the earthquake, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in an earlier briefing.
Phivolcs revealed that these aftershocks-recorded in 41 different areas-occurred as of 1 p.m., just a few hours after the main tremor at 9:43 a.m.
It added that the number immediately rose to 213, barely an hour later at 1:50 p.m. /mr
