The death toll from Typhoon ‘Tino’ in Negros Island rose to 70 on Friday, Nov. 7, with authorities warning that the number could still climb as 66 people remain missing.
Of the missing, 55 are from Negros Occidental and 11 from Canlaon City in Negros Oriental, according to reports from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (PDRRMOs).
In Negros Occidental, fatalities were recorded in the following areas: Bago City (8), La Castellana (10), Murcia (2), San Carlos City (3), La Carlota City (3), Hinigaran (8), Isabela (1), Moises Padilla (12), Pontevedra (1), Binalbagan (4), and Himamaylan (1).
The missing persons were reported in Bago City (5), La Castellana (18), San Carlos City (2), La Carlota City (11), Hinigaran (2), Isabela (6), and Moises Padilla (11).
In Negros Oriental, the number of deaths in Canlaon City rose to 16, with 11 people still unaccounted for, while one fatality was also reported in Vallehermoso.
Rep. Javier Miguel Benitez (Negros Occidental, 3rd District) clarified that two bodies earlier found in Murcia were later identified as residents of Barangay Quezon, San Carlos City, and have since been claimed by their family.
‘To clarify, they are not residents of Murcia,’ Benitez said, adding that there were no reported casualties in the 3rd District of Negros Occidental.
Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson expressed grief over the mounting death toll, calling it ‘very unfortunate.’
