Ex-Ateneo players go to CIDG amid Baterbonia-Adili drowning probe

Several former Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball players arrived at the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Camp Crame, Quezon City on Tuesday, June 16, amid its investigation into the fatal drownings of players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

Among the players seen entering the CIDG were Anton Asistio, Mike Nieto, Geo Chiu, Kyle Ong, Tyler Tio, Lars Fjelvang, Dom Escobar, Kymani Ladi and Josh Lazaro.

None of them gave a statement to the media. Baterbonia and Adili died after being supposedly swept away by a current during a purported training activity along a shoreline in Dipaculao, Aurora last June 8.

The CIDG previously said its investigation into the incident was now looking into possible homicide or hazing, citing that the activity had been done at a secluded area some 300 meters away from the beach resort the team had been checked into.

The CIDG also earlier said it was looking into allegations of questionable practices during supposed training activities under then-head coach Tab Baldwin.

For his part, Baldwin apologized over Baterbonia and Adili’s deaths in a video posted on Ateneo’s social media four days after the incident. /das
