PBA: Yeng Guiao signs new contract extension with Rain or Shine

Coach Yeng Guiao signed a contract extension to remain with Rain or Shine until 2030, the PBA team announced on Thursday.

The Elasto Painters posted a photo of the veteran mentor being flanked by team executives led by co-owners Raymund Yu and Terry Que.

His new deal, however, won’t take effect until 2028 as he is still in the third year of his current five-year pact.

Rain or Shine is hoping to see Guiao steer the franchise to its first title since the 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

‘The journey continues. And it’s not stopping anytime soon,’ the Elasto Painters said on their social media post.

Guiao’s second stint with Rain or Shine started in 2022 after a six-year tenure with NLEX. Since then, the Elasto Painters have risen back into contention, having made the semifinals in five of the last six conferences.

He has also developed a young core led by Adrian Nocum, Jhonard Clarito, Andrei Caracut and Santi Santillan, which Guiao will lean on as Rain or Shine tries to finally break past the semis.

Guiao’s first stint with Rain or Shine was from 2011 to 2016, steering the Elasto Painters to their two PBA championships, including the breakthrough run in the 2012 Governors’ Cup.

The new deal came weeks before the resumption of the season-ending Governors’ Cup in October.

And Guiao has been given a massive boost with veteran Stanley Pringle and speedy sophomore Felix Lemetti having played in a tune-up game against the Korean Basketball League’s LG Sakers.

Rain or Shine currently holds a share of the lead in Group B with a 4-2 win-loss slate.
