Phivolcs lifts tsunami warning after Mindano earthquake

State seismologists lifted the tsunami warning on Monday following a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao.

Earlier, Phivolcs issued a tsunami warning, forecasting waves of more than a meter above the normal tides to occur between 7:37 a.m. and 9:37 a.m.

‘After the extended two-hour observation period, minor sea level disturbances continued to be recorded; however, these observed wave heights are too small to cause damage,’ Phivolcs said in its advisory.

Phivolcs said these areas saw tsunami waves:

Kiamba, Sarangani: 1.48 meters

Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat: 0.84 meters

Maasim, Sarangani: 0.48 meters

Zamboanga City: 0.25 meters

Mati City, Davao Oriental: 0.21 meters

Tandag City, Surigao del Sur: 0.09 meters

The earthquake left at least 19 people dead, 12 still missing, and 134 injured, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

The earthquake occurred off the shores of Sarangani at 07:37 a.m. with a shallow depth of 33 kilometers.
