Power plant outages trigger new red alert over Visayas grid

Power interruptions may hound Visayas consumers on Tuesday as the grid continues to suffer from insufficient electricity supply.

In an advisory, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines said the red alert would be in effect from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

A yellow alert would likewise be in effect from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

As of 1:30 p.m., the available capacity was 2,283 megawatts (MW) while peak demand was 2,435 MW.

The NGCP said it raised the power alerts because of limited imports from Mindanao following unplanned outages at two power facilities.

The Mindanao grid is also seeing rising demand.

A yellow alert indicates that available power reserves are thinning, meaning any unexpected plant outage could trigger service interruptions. A red alert indicates that the supply cannot meet the demand, which increases the likelihood of rotational brownouts unless we manage consumption.
