Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-wong) is now out of Luzon’s landmass early Monday morning as it further weakens, according to state meteorologists.
As of 4:00 a.m., Uwan is now over the coastal waters of Bacnotan, La Union, per the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
Pagasa said the typhoon is moving west-northwestward at 25 kilometers per hour (kph), packing maximum sustained winds of 150 kph with gustiness of 230 kph.
This is weaker than its last update, when Uwan had packed maximum sustained winds of 165 kph with gusts of up to 275 kph.
As it moves northward over the West Philippine Sea, Uwan is forecast to re-intensify between Tuesday and Wednesday, Pagasa said.
However, due to unfavorable environmental conditions, the bureau said a weakening trend is expected through the remaining forecast period.
Uwan tore off roofs and uprooted trees as it traversed through Luzon’s landmass.
The Office of Civil Defense reported one dead and two injuries so far due to Uwan.
The Philippines is typhoon-prone, as it lies within the western Pacific Typhoon Belt, a region where warm ocean waters and moist tropical air create ideal conditions for tropical cyclones to form.
Meanwhile, Pagasa still raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals (TCWS) in Luzon and parts of Visayas due to Uwan.
