Xolo Maridueña is preparing to set sail, as he was confirmed to star as Portgas D. Ace in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of ‘One Piece’ season three.
Maridueña’s casting was confirmed by the streaming service in a press release. The series’ third installment will begin filming later this year in Cape Town, South Africa.
The Mexican-American actor will be joining ‘Oh, Mary!’ star Cole Escola in season three, with the latter recently confirmed to star as theatrical assassin Bon Clay. Further details on the cast are yet to be announced.
Also known as ‘Fire Fist’ Ace, Portgas was the captain of the Spade Pirates before he was asked to join the Whitebeard Pirates in the original anime. The character is often seen shirtless with a machete and a large hat.
Maridueña is notable for starring as Miguel Diaz in the Netflix action series ‘Cobra Kai,’ as well as Jaime Reyes and Blue Beetle in the DC’s ‘Blue Beetle,’ both of which helped him rise in popularity.
Based on the beloved anime of the same name, the live-action adaptation of ‘One Piece’ premiered on the streaming giant in August 2023. Season two will premiere in March 2026.
Just like the anime’s original storyline, it tells the story of the Straw Hat Pirates – led by Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) – in an expedition to uncover the legendary ‘One Piece’ which has long remained a mystery. /edv
