Death toll from Bangkok pub fire rises to 41

Two more people have succumbed to injuries suffered in a fire at a Bangkok beer hall last month, bringing the death toll to 41, authorities said on Tuesday.

The two male victims were identified as Khem Meechai, who died at Rajavithi Hospital, and Thatsanai Manpraphan, who died at Taksin Hospital.

The fire erupted at Rong Beer Na Ladprao in Chatuchak district a few minutes before midnight on July 12. At the time there were about 300 customers in the single-storey concrete building.

Videos showed powerful jets of flame coming from the entrance to the pub. Firefighters took half an hour to bring it under control.

Most victims were said to have died from smoke inhalation after being trapped in the building, where emergency exits were reportedly poorly marked and partially blocked.

Authorities said the blaze was caused by a short-circuit linked to unauthorised modifications to the electrical system.

Experts said ?non-fire-retardant foam and plastic decor produced ?extreme heat and toxic smoke.

The fire tragedy has led to nationwide safety inspections as well as calls to overhaul outdated laws related to entertainment venues.

Police on Aug 9 filed charges including negligence causing death against the venue owner. Suwicha Salaibat, 45, was injured in the blaze and is still recovering in hospital.
