Google has begun notifying users via email that it will start shutting down Google Assistant across several platforms, including smartphones and smartwatches, from Sept 4, 2026, as it shifts focus entirely towards its Gemini AI system.
The move mirrors the recent integration of Google AI Studio into Gemini, marking a major step in the tech giant’s full transition to its next-generation artificial intelligence platform.
Google Assistant is an AI-powered virtual personal assistant that enables users to execute commands, search for information, and control connected devices hands-free using voice commands or text inputs.
Under the rollout, Google Assistant will no longer be available on smartphones, tablets, Wear OS smartwatches or Gemini-compatible wireless headphones, and Android Auto in vehicles.
The gradual shutdown process will take several weeks to affect all user groups, after which Google Assistant will cease to function entirely on the specified devices.
However, certain hardware will remain unaffected for now, including Google Home speakers, Smart Displays, Google TV, and vehicles equipped with Google built-in systems, where Assistant will continue to operate normally while Google prepares to migrate them to Gemini as quickly as possible.
The company had originally planned to retire Google Assistant by the end of 2025, but deferred the deadline to 2026 to allow adequate preparation time and ensure a smoother system transition for users.
