Microsoft has issued a support article, identified as KB5070538 and titled “Understanding driver updates,” to address widespread user confusion regarding why the Windows operating system (OS) sometimes installs seemingly duplicate drivers or, conversely, older versions of existing drivers.
Drivers are fundamentally explained by the software firm as intermediary software that bridges the gap between hardware components-such as graphics cards, sound chips or peripherals-and the OS itself, ensuring optimal performance for each element.
The complexity arises because Windows offers multiple conduits for driver installation or updates. These include the standard Windows Update mechanism, direct downloads from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) or drivers bundled with the OS installation media, leading to potential user bewilderment, particularly following major upgrades like the transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11, where update frequency often increases.
Microsoft detailed that older drivers often utilise a distinct naming format: ‘Publisher name – Device class – Version number,’ such as “Intel – System – 1.2.3.4.” This differs from the naming convention used for newer drivers, which adhere to the latest automated standards set by Windows Update. Therefore, encountering unfamiliar or different-looking names is considered normal system behaviour.
Addressing the common misconception that Windows Update installs outdated drivers, Microsoft clarified that the visible ‘Driver Date’ is not the deciding factor for installation. This date is set by the hardware manufacturer and has no bearing on the system’s selection criteria. Instead, Windows prioritises installing the “most suitable driver” based on criteria established by the device manufacturer, such as compatibility, performance metrics or Microsoft certification. Consequently, a driver with an older date might be selected if it offers proven stability and official validation over a newer, yet untested, iteration.
The corporation also explained the presence of multiple drivers with similar names or version numbers for a single device. This occurs because certain hardware functions are modularised for superior performance management; for instance, a graphics card might require one driver for core graphics rendering and another for integrated video or audio processing. Thus, multiple installations are necessary even if the names appear repetitive.
Finally, some manufacturers employ non-sequential version numbering schemes, such as jumping directly from version 100 to 101, which can deceptively suggest a regression to an older release. Microsoft confirmed that the OS is engineered to comprehend these internal manufacturer structures and will only deploy the driver version deemed appropriate for the specific device in question.
