PM maps out agenda for Myanmar visit

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul will hold talks with Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing during the Myanmar leader’s official visit to Thailand this week.

The agenda includes cross-border river pollution, haze, ethnic minority issues, drug trafficking, call centre scams and other online fraud.

Mr Anutin, who also serves as interior minister, said Thailand would welcome the Myanmar president on Thursday and Friday.

Formal bilateral talks and a private meeting on Thursday would allow the leaders to exchange views and strengthen cooperation on shared concerns and relations, he said.

The visit will also include discussions with the Thai-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce, bringing together private-sector representatives and business leaders from both countries to promote trade and investment cooperation.

Mr Anutin said stronger bilateral ties should not rely solely on cooperation between state agencies but should be supported by closer engagement between businesses in both countries.

He said several cross-border challenges required close cooperation, including toxic contamination in shared rivers and transboundary haze pollution.

Mr Anutin said Thailand and Myanmar had maintained good neighbourly relations for many years, adding that neighbours should help one another when problems arose.

Stronger cooperation would benefit people in both nations and help their governments resolve shared challenges more effectively, added Mr Anutin while speaking to reporters.
