The Northern Bangkok District Court on Friday sentenced a 77-year-old motorist to one month in jail, suspended for two years, for driving against traffic on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road.
The court also suspended her driving licence for six months and ordered her Mercedes-Benz confiscated.
The woman, identified only as Phayao, was found guilty of driving without regard for the safety of other people’s lives or physical safety under Sections 43(8) and 158/1 of the Land Traffic Act. She was booked for driving against traffic on the inbound side of Vibhavadi Rangsit Road on Sept 7.
The court initially sentenced her to two months in jail and fined her 8,000 baht, but halved both penalties to one month and 4,000 baht after she pleaded guilty.
In suspending the jail term, the court said there was nothing seriously adverse in her character or conduct, that she had a permanent residence and had not previously served a prison sentence. It also found the circumstances of the offence were not particularly serious.
The defendant was on probation for one year, ordered to report to a probation officer three times and perform 12 hours of community service.
