Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on Nigerians to justify the faith of the nation’s founding fathers, emphasising that the country handed over to the current generation is a sacred legacy to cherish and build upon.
In a goodwill message issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Eseme Eyiboh, to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, Akpabio paid tribute to the pioneers whose sacrifices paved the way for self-government and national sovereignty.
He said: ‘Sixty-six years ago, our national flag rose to proclaim the birth of an independent Nigeria. They handed us a country to cherish and a future to build.’
Paying homage to the founding fathers and past generations whose courage and labour laid Nigeria’s foundation, Akpabio noted that independence represented the hopes of millions for freedom, dignity, and self-determination. He stressed that preserving this legacy requires every generation to renew their commitment to the nation’s unity and progress.
Reflecting on the country’s trajectory, the Senate President acknowledged that while Nigeria’s history has been marked by both triumphs and trials, the enduring spirit of its people has consistently overcome uncertainty.
He highlighted the resilience of everyday citizens – farmers, teachers, entrepreneurs, and vibrant youth – alongside the global achievements of Nigerians in music and enterprise, as living proof of the country’s potential.
Akpabio urged citizens to draw strength from their shared inheritance and embrace the nation’s rich cultural and religious diversity.
‘Let this anniversary renew our affection for one another and remind us that the green-white-green shelters us all,’ he said, underscoring collective peace as a vital prerequisite for a prosperous future.
He also honoured the sacrifices of the Armed Forces and security agencies, offering solemn gratitude to the families of fallen heroes who gave their lives to protect the nation’s freedom and unity.
Reaffirming the commitment of the 10th National Assembly, Akpabio assured Nigerians that parliament would continue to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration in strengthening the country and elevating the living standards of all citizens.
Extending warm congratulations to President Tinubu and Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, Akpabio concluded with a charge for national devotion: ‘Independence is an inheritance renewed by every generation.
‘Our past gives us perspective, our present gives us responsibility, and our future gives us purpose.’
