World Record holder Tobi Amusan fell short last night in her bid to win a third consecutive Commonwealth Games women’s 100m hurdles title.
Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton won gold, clocking 12.33 seconds to end Amusan’s bid for a historic third consecutive title in the event.
Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds took silver in 12.41 seconds, while Amusan settled for bronze in 12.60 seconds – missing out on the podium’s top step after twice successfully defending her title, at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022.
South Africa’s Marione Fourie narrowly missed a medal, finishing fourth in 12.66 seconds, just 0.06 seconds adrift of Amusan.
Amusan had entered the final as overwhelming favourite after a dominant heat performance , winning in a wind-assisted 12.19 seconds – the fastest time ever recorded in the event at the Commonwealth Games, though it did not count for record purposes due to a +3.8m/s tailwind exceeding the legal limit.
However, she was unable to match that performance when it mattered most.
Despite missing out on a historic third straight Commonwealth Games title, Amusan still added another medal to Team Nigeria’s tally, extending her impressive record on the Commonwealth Games stage with yet another podium finish.
