The Nigerian Army has activated the 28 Armoured Brigade and Garrison in Birnin Kebbi, alongside the 281 Tank Battalion in Yauri and 381 Artillery Regiment in Kaoje, as part of efforts to strengthen security operations and protect vulnerable communities in Kebbi State.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, who operationalised the formations, was represented by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2, Joint Task Force, North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Maj.-Gen. Bemgba Paul Koughna.
Koughna said the establishment of the new formations was in line with the Army’s efforts to optimise its force structure, expand its operational footprint, strengthen command and control and improve response time to security threats across the North-West.
He charged the Acting Commander of 28 Brigade, Col. Abdullahi Umar, to ensure that the new deployment provided the necessary fire support capabilities to enhance military operations across the division’s area of responsibility.
The GOC said the brigade would also strengthen ongoing security operations in Kebbi, particularly against criminal elements and other threats to the safety of residents.
He stressed the need for discipline, tactical focus and effective collaboration among security agencies and other stakeholders to achieve lasting peace in the state.
Koughna further urged the troops to maintain high standards of professionalism and strictly observe the Rules of Engagement while protecting law-abiding citizens and carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.
The GOC also commiserated with residents of Jandutse community over the recent death of one of its members in a bandit attack.
He assured the community of increased military presence to enhance the safety of residents and prevent further attacks.
The residents expressed appreciation to the GOC for the Army’s continued efforts to improve security in Kebbi State.
