Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, has urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to shun bitterness and violence as the 2027 election season gathers momentum.
Guwor gave the warning yesterday while addressing lawmakers at the resumption of plenary after the Assembly’s six-week annual vacation.
He said politicians and public servants had a responsibility to ensure campaigns were conducted peacefully, urging contestants to focus on ideas, programmes, competence, character and service.
‘As politicians and public servants, we have a special responsibility to ensure that the electoral season does not become a season of bitterness, violence and division,’ he said.
Guwor noted that campaigns for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections began on August 19, while campaigns for governorship and state assembly elections start on September 9.
He congratulated the government and people of Delta on the expansion of representation in the state assembly, with state constituencies rising from 29 to 38, describing the nine additional seats as historic for democratic participation.
On legislative matters, he urged committee chairmen and members to intensify efforts to conclude pending bills, motions and petitions before the end of the legislative calendar.
