Fed Govt targets $1tr economy through stronger logistics ties with China

The Federal Government has said strengthening logistics and transport cooperation with China will be critical to achieving Nigeria’s target of building a one trillion dollar economy by 2030.

The Technical Adviser to the Vice President on Transportation, Logistics and Innovation, Dr. Segun Obayendo, said efficient transport infrastructure, resilient supply chains and seamless logistics would determine the country’s ability to attract investment, expand exports and compete in global markets.

Speaking at the 2026 Ningbo Africa Trade and Logistics Cooperation Forum in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China, Obayendo said the Tinubu administration was implementing policies to modernise transport infrastructure and position Nigeria as the logistics and distribution hub of West Africa.

He said the Renewed Hope Agenda places priority on infrastructure development, trade facilitation and investment promotion, adding that these objectives cannot be achieved without an integrated transport and logistics system.

According to him, Nigeria’s aspiration to build a one trillion dollar economy depends not only on production, but also on how efficiently goods, services and people move across the country and beyond.

He said Nigeria’s strategic location, large consumer market, natural resources and access to the African Continental Free Trade Area provide a strong platform for regional economic leadership, but stressed that sustained investment in rail, ports, highways, inland dry ports and digital logistics platforms was required to unlock the opportunities.

Obayendo described China’s zero tariff policy for exports from African countries as a major opportunity for Nigeria to increase exports, deepen manufacturing and attract fresh investments.

He urged Nigerian businesses to leverage improved logistics and trade facilitation to become more competitive in international markets.

The presidential aide said Nigeria-China cooperation should go beyond trade to embrace technology transfer, industrial development, infrastructure investment, innovation and skills development capable of creating jobs for millions of Nigerians.

Obayendo welcomed the proposed partnership on port development and logistics infrastructure between GKandA Logistics Services Limited and China based Ningbo Foreign Trade Company Limited, describing it as a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria’s logistics capacity and bilateral economic ties.

He called on governments, development partners, financial institutions and the private sector to sustain collaboration in implementing agreements reached at the forum to maximise their long term economic benefits.
