FG commissions four power transformers to boost electricity supply in Kano

The Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has commissioned four power transformers at four transmission substations in Kano State to boost electricity supply in the state.

The facilities are the Kumbotso, Dan’Agundi, Dakata and the newly constructed Walalambe transmission substations.

The projects, executed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and financed by the World Bank, include the installation of a 300MVA 330/132/33kV and a 100MVA 132/33kV transformer at Kumbotso, a 100MVA 132/33kV transformer each at Dan’Agundi and Dakata, and a new 2x40MVA 132/33kV substation at Walalambe.

Speaking at the various commissioning ceremonies, where he represented Governor Abba Yusuf, Tegbe conveyed the warm greetings of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the projects underscore the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the national grid under the Renewed Hope agenda.

At Walalambe, the first substation commissioned, the Minister said the new facility will open a new route for bulk power to industrial corridors.

‘Kano’s capacity for enterprise has never been in doubt. The task before us is to provide infrastructure that allows that enterprise to flourish. Here at Walalambe, we are opening a new route for bulk electricity to reach the industrial and commercial corridors where investment, production and employment depend on it,’ he said.

He explained that the substation will benefit Tokarawa Industrial Area, Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and adjoining communities, and provide alternative supply arrangements for Mariri, Jogana, Farm Centre and Zaria Road injection substations.

Highlighting the dedicated 33kV feeder to Lee Group of Companies which had operated off-grid for more than 30 years, the Minister noted that ‘Providing a route to grid supply for an established industrial enterprise demonstrates the economic purpose of transmission investment.
