The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged residents to use the forthcoming 2027 general elections to elect leaders capable of sustaining development and expanding infrastructure in the nation’s capital.
Wike, who made the call in his 2026 Independence Day message to FCT residents, said the elections should provide an opportunity to support leaders with the vision and capacity to deliver development and prosperity.
He said: ‘I enjoin you all to see it as an opportunity to vote in progressive, visionary leaders that will sustain and expand the infrastructural revolution that has commenced in the FCT’.
The minister said the FCT Administration had invested heavily in critical infrastructure, including road construction, public transportation, healthcare and education, as part of efforts to transform Abuja into a world-class capital city.
According to him, the administration has upgraded road networks from the city centre to rural communities, with drainage and solar lighting provided on several roads to improve accessibility and security.
In the statement signed on Thursday, Wike said ultramodern bus terminals had also been constructed in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), with plans to extend similar facilities to Kuje, Bwari and Gwagwalada.
The minister said the administration was also improving access to healthcare and education across the six area councils, stressing that a healthy and educated population remained critical to sustainable development.
He assured residents that security remained a priority, adding that the administration was working with security agencies to intensify surveillance, strengthen community policing and deploy modern technology to combat crime.
Wike urged residents to remain law-abiding, support government development initiatives and protect public infrastructure from vandalism.
He also appealed to residents to maintain cleanliness and orderliness across the FCT, while promoting peaceful coexistence among people of different ethnic and religious backgrounds.
Wike described Abuja as a symbol of Nigeria’s unity, where people from different tribes, languages and faiths live and work together.
He said the administration remained committed to building an inclusive and functional capital city where public services would work for all residents.
The minister congratulated Nigerians on the 66th Independence Anniversary, expressing optimism that the country’s future remained bright under the current reform efforts of President Bola Tinubu.
He said the FCT would continue to align with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope agenda while ensuring that development extended beyond the city centre to communities across the territory.
