JAMB warns varsities against issuing admission letters

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said it is the only authority vested with the responsibility of issuing admission letters to candidates.

The board said universities should desist from issuing admission letters as this is not their responsibility.

The JAMB Registrar Prof. Segun Aina stated this when he hosted a delegation from Veritas University Bwari Abuja during a visit.

Aina said JAMB is the only body statutorily empowered to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions including universities polytechnics and colleges of education.

He said candidates could be misled into believing that admission was genuine when they received letters issued by institutions outside the approved process.

‘The irony of the situation is that once candidates see a document as emanating from an institution purporting to offer them admission they believe that such is real’ he said.

The registrar urged universities involved in the practice to desist and ensure that candidates obtain the appropriate admission documents from the board.

He recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed that all admissions be processed through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) warning that admissions conducted outside the platform would be deemed illegal and invalid.

Aina said no institution is permitted to substitute its own admission letter for the official JAMB letter issued after a candidate has accepted an offer on CAPS.

The JAMB registrar insisted that only admissions recognised through the platform would be accepted for such purposes including mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
