The United States has congratulated Nigeria on its 66th Independence anniversary, describing the West African nation as a key partner in promoting regional stability and economic growth.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the U.S. Department of State, the American government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Nigeria, noting that both countries share common democratic values and interests.
‘On behalf of the United States of America, I extend my congratulations to the people of Nigeria on the 66th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence,’ the statement said.
The U.S. said it values its relationship with Nigeria and appreciates the substantive dialogue between the two nations over the past year.
Describing Nigeria as Africa’s largest democracy and one of the continent’s biggest economies, the statement noted that the country plays a vital role in advancing peace, stability and economic development across the region.

According to the statement, both nations remain united by a shared commitment to democratic principles, protecting religious freedom, expanding commercial ties, and fostering peace and security.

Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, making this year’s celebration the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary. The annual event is marked by official ceremonies and reflections on the nation’s journey, achievements and aspirations.
