Marcos made the commitment in his fifth State of the Nation Address (Sona), where he also said the government expects to complete this year the cancellation of debts of agrarian reform beneficiaries.

‘To give agrarian reform beneficiaries peace of mind, we have continuously distributed the land titles awarded to them,’ Marcos said.

‘Over the past four years, we have distributed more than 400,000 land titles covering a total of over 500,000 hectares. We will complete the distribution of these titles next year,’ he added.

The President said some beneficiaries had waited between 30 and 60 years for their land titles.

For some families, he said, the wait stretched across generations, with grandchildren eventually receiving titles intended for beneficiaries.

‘Many beneficiaries waited 30 to 60 years. Some were fortunate enough to witness the issuance of their land titles. But because of the long delay, in some cases it was already their grandchildren who received them.’

Debt cancellation this year

Apart from land titles, Marcos said freeing agrarian reform beneficiaries from debt was also important to providing them with greater security.

‘Equally important to them is the security that comes from being freed from debt,’ he said.

Marcos then committed to completing the ongoing cancellation of agrarian reform beneficiaries’ debts this year.

‘That is why you can expect us to complete the cancellation of our agrarian reform beneficiaries’ debts this year.’

The President said support from the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) would continue even as the government moves to complete land-title distribution and debt cancellation.

He cited irrigation, roads, machinery and loans among the forms of assistance being provided to agrarian reform beneficiaries.

‘Despite these efforts, the Department of Agrarian Reform will continue supporting agrarian reform through irrigation, roads, machinery, and loans for its beneficiaries,’ Marcos vowed.

N-HYPPADEC distributes cash, relief materials to Kwara farmers affected by dry-season disaster

The Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) on Monday presented farm inputs and cash to 5,000 rural farmers in Kwara State as part of efforts to cushion the effects of the dry-season farming disaster suffered by residents.

Speaking during the distribution in Ilorin, the Managing Director of the commission, Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, said the farmers were assisted with power tillers, planters and other farm equipment, adding that the state government complemented the intervention with improved maize seedlings, fertilisers and agrochemicals.

Yelwa, who said the commission had also earmarked ?10 million for 100 indigent farmers recently affected by natural disasters in some agrarian communities in the state, said the distribution of the relief materials was aimed at fulfilling the commission’s earlier promise to assist farmers whose farmlands and crops were destroyed during the dry season.

He recalled that HYPPADEC had sympathised with the affected communities at the time of the incident and assured them of support to cushion the impact of their losses.

‘We are here today to distribute relief items to communities affected during the dry season, where many farmers lost their farmlands and crops. We promised them, and today we are fulfilling that promise,’ Yelwa said.

He also applauded the state government for providing hybrid maize seeds for distribution to farmers across the five local government areas covered by the programme.

He described the initiative as a significant step towards improving agricultural productivity and enhancing farmers’ livelihoods.

According to him, the government’s intervention would encourage improved productivity among farmers, create wealth and contribute to food security in the state.

‘We felt it was important to appreciate the state government for this initiative and encourage it to continue supporting farmers. This is not only beneficial to the state but also to the farmers and their families,’ he said.

On the cost of the intervention, Yelwa said the commission had committed about ?100 million to the relief exercise, adding that ?10 million was earmarked for distribution among 100 farmers whose farmlands were affected, while the relief materials were valued at about ?90 million at the time of purchase.

‘What is important is that the government is thinking about its people and supporting farmers. That is the real investment,’ he said.

Also speaking, the Supervising Commissioner for Agriculture in Kwara, Mrs Toyosi Thomas, said the partnership between HYPPADEC and the state government would boost agricultural productivity and improve farmers’ yields.

The commissioner described the initiative as a demonstration of effective collaboration between the commission, the state government and local government councils in supporting farmers.

She added that the beneficiaries would benefit from extension services to ensure proper utilisation of the inputs and adoption of improved farming practices.

‘It is not common for farmers to receive mechanisation support, production inputs and extension services together. This collaboration is expected to deliver meaningful results,’ she said.

The commissioner also said the Kwara State Ministry of Agriculture was supporting 7,500 farmers with fertilisers, while 2,000 farmers would benefit from the state’s Special Maize Programme.

She explained that the programme was designed as a holistic intervention, providing mechanisation support, technical extension services, production inputs and an off-take arrangement with flour mills.

The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Abubakar Abdullai, advised the beneficiaries to take full advantage of the intervention by adopting improved farming practices and maximising the use of the hybrid seeds.

He said Kwara had enormous agricultural potential, noting that maize could be cultivated twice annually, while rice could be grown up to three times a year because of the state’s favourable conditions.

‘There are buyers waiting for the harvest. The opportunity is there, and it is now up to the farmers to make the most of it and become successful commercial farmers,’ he said.

Bus preaching ban: ‘They want to turn Nigeria into an Islamic nation’ – Pastor Ibiyeomie

Founder of Salvation Ministries, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, has criticised the recent ban on preaching in commercial buses, alleging that it amounts to unequal treatment of Christians and warning against what he described as ‘attempts to turn Nigeria into an Islamic nation’.

Speaking during a church service, Ibiyeomie argued that Christians should enjoy the same freedom to publicly practise their faith as Muslims, insisting that freedom of religion must apply equally to all Nigerians.

‘Allow Christians alone. As we allow Muslims, also allow Christians,’ he said.

According to the cleric, if Muslims are permitted to publicly use loudspeakers for religious activities, Christians should also be allowed to preach in public places, including commercial buses.

‘If Muslims can also raise their microphone, we are free to preach. There is freedom of religion. Nobody is warning the Muslims. You should not stop us from preaching,’ he said.

Ibiyeomie urged journalists reporting his sermon to present his comments accurately and avoid taking them out of context.

‘Don’t edit what I said. Put it as I said it. We want peace. Don’t turn my words,’ he said.

The pastor maintained that he would not remain silent if Christianity was being unfairly targeted or discriminated against.

‘I will never be alive to see Christianity be humiliated in Nigeria. Never,’ he declared.

He further alleged that there were efforts to turn Nigeria into an Islamic nation but insisted such attempts would not succeed.

‘They want to turn Nigeria into an Islamic nation. Some people think I’m joking. It’s coming, but it can never be. Nigeria will never be an Islamic nation,’ he said.

Ibiyeomie added that some Christians would rather leave the country than be prevented from freely practising their faith.

‘If you want peace, as you practise your religion, practise your Christianity,’ he said.

The cleric also criticised what he described as the silence of many Christian leaders, alleging that some had compromised their independence because of political patronage.

‘Most preachers can’t talk because they’ve taken money from the leaders. Go and ask your president if I’ve taken one dime from him so I can talk. You can’t take money from a man and talk to him,’ he said.

Rejecting claims that his views were influenced by ethnic considerations, Ibiyeomie said he had consistently spoken out on national issues regardless of who occupied the presidency.

‘I will never be a tribalistic preacher. Never,’ he said.

Drawing a comparison between the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan and the current government, he argued that many religious leaders who were outspoken in the past had become silent despite the country’s worsening challenges.

‘Jonathan was here, they were shouting. It has come now, everyone is quiet. Even preachers are quiet,’ he said, attributing the silence to tribal and political sentiments.

The pastor also faulted lawmakers for focusing on issues such as restrictions on public preaching while, according to him, failing to adequately address insecurity, terrorism, hunger and attacks on Nigerians abroad.

‘Terrorism is a problem. Hunger is a problem. Nigeria has a problem,’ he said.

He urged authorities to avoid policies capable of creating religious tension, insisting that lasting peace can only be achieved when adherents of all faiths enjoy equal rights under the law.

‘If you want peace, as Muslims practise their religion, allow Christians to practise theirs,’ he added.

Exec: Meralco may sue Socoteco II

The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) may pursue legal action against the South Cotabato II Electric Cooperative (Socoteco II) following the rejection of its bid to partner with the nonprofit distribution utility, which favored a competing offer from Ignite Power.

‘We may file a case against them. We are studying our legal options. We wrote them a letter objecting to the illegal direct award, manifest partiality to Ignite Power and lack of transparency,’ Meralco Senior Vice president Arnel Paciano Casanova said Monday.

There was no reply from Socoteco II, he added.

The member consumer owners (MCOs) of Socoteco II reportedly threw their full support behind to a proposed joint venture with the Razon-Pacquiao-backed Ignite Power Ignite during Socoteco II’s 43rd Annual General Membership Assembly last Saturday.

Casanova said the process by which the deal was approved is ‘devoid of transparency and fraught with deception and coercion’ of the MCOs who were made to vote on a deal that were never even disclosed or explained to them. ‘It is a sham proceeding in violation of the law.’

He likened the process as ‘a scripted event’ that violated public bidding laws and suppressed opposition, neglecting the best interests of the consumers.

‘Opposition and objections were stifled in a proceeding that resembles a scripted telenovela. The award was in violation of existing laws on public bidding and competitive selection where the MCOs should have been given a choice that was best for the interest of the consumers.’

Ignite Power President Roel Castro, however, said this still requires approval through a plebiscite among cooperative members and the issuance of guidelines by the National Electrification Administration (NEA).

‘Though there was an adoption of resolutions during the AGMA, the CJVA [conditional joint venture agreement] has to be approved by the majority of the member-consumer-owners. This is the only time we can say that the agreement is approved for execution. Its still a long way. There will still be the franchise approval, ERC’s [Energy Regulatory Commission] issuance of the CPCN [certificate of public convenience and necessity] and clearance by NEA and PCC [Philippine Competition Commission],’ said Castro.

He added that the company is ready to pour in billions of pesos to finance the rehabilitation and modernization of Socoteco II’s facility.

‘If we are to follow the capex [capital expenditure] catch-up plan developed by Socoteco II and supervised by NEA, it needs around P10 billion in the next five years. That’s just for Socoteco II to catch up with their capex plan,’ Castro said.

Troops foil plot to abduct 21 students, terrorists attacks

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have foiled an attempted terrorist infiltration on a military base and evacuated 21 female students to safety following intelligence on a planned attack in Borno.

The information was contained in latest operational reports made available on Monday.

According to the reports, the troops also apprehended a suspected cross-border kidnapper operating between Nigeria and Cameroon.

The report said troops of 3 Battalion at Forward Operating Base Logomani detected ISWAP/JAS terrorists attempting to encircle their position through CCTV surveillance.

It said the troops engaged the terrorists, forcing them to withdraw before executing the planned infiltration.

The report also said that troops of Sector 3 responded to intelligence indicating that seven suspected ISWAP/JAS terrorists carrying improvised explosive devices were sighted near the Water Board IDP Camp in Monguno.

It said the troops immediately evacuated 21 female students lodging nearby to Kinnasara Barracks.

‘Three students who suffered seizures during the evacuation were stabilised at a hospital, while security around the area was reinforced,’ the report said.

In another operation, troops of 115 Task Force Battalion and local hunters engaged terrorists at Surajo village in Askira Uba Local Government Area of the state.

According to the report, the terrorists fled, abandoning three bicycles and two coolers.

It also disclosed that troops of 247 Reconnaissance Battalion and hunters arrested a suspected kidnapper at Gaya in Mubi South Local Government Area of Adamawa.

The suspect reportedly confessed to belonging to a kidnapping syndicate operating from the Solere Forest in Cameroon and crossing into Nigeria after carrying out abductions.

In other theatres, the report said troops of Operation MESA, working with police and vigilantes, rescued a kidnap victim along the Koton Karfe-Okparake Road in Kogi, adding that three suspected terrorists were apprehended during the operation.

‘Troops recovered one Dane gun, one motorcycle, three mobile phones and ?23,000 from the suspects.

‘The rescued victim has been reunited with his family,’ the report said.

In Kebbi, the report said troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA responded to terrorist activities along the Wasagu-Ayu Road in Wasagu Local Government Area.

It added that troops engaged the terrorists, forcing them to flee and abandon two motorcycles.

Marcos, Duterte ratings decline in Q2 2026 – survey

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte both saw their performance and trust ratings decline in the second quarter of 2026, according to Octa Research.

The research firm released its latest noncommissioned ‘Tugon ng Masa’ nationwide survey on Monday, July 27, coinciding with the president’s fifth State of the Nation Address. The survey was conducted from July 4 to 11.

In the survey, Marcos’ performance rating plunged by 8 percentage points, from 55 percent in the first quarter to 47 percent in the second quarter of 2026.

‘The decline more than erased the 4-point gain recorded in the first quarter and left the president without a majority performance rating,’ Octa Research said.

The latest survey also showed that 33 percent of Filipinos expressed dissatisfaction with Marcos’ performance.

As for his trust rating, Marcos also lost 5 percentage points from his 54 percent rating in the first quarter of the year. He now has a 49 percent trust rating, with 32 percent of Filipino respondents expressing distrust.

Octa Research said Marcos’ ratings fell most sharply in Mindanao, where his satisfaction rating dropped by 25 percentage points and his trust rating fell by 19 percentage points.

Balance Luzon, which includes his bailiwick, the Ilocos Region, was ‘the only major area where the president retained majority trust and performance ratings.’

Meanwhile, Duterte’s performance and trust ratings in July are ‘both below majority level for the first time since November 2024,’ Octa Research noted.

The latest performance rating of the vice president-whose impeachment trial started on July 6-is at 45 percent, showing a 5-percentage-point decline from her 50 percent rating in March.

The latest survey also showed that her dissatisfaction rating climbed to 36 percent.

Duterte’s trust rating also fell by 8 percentage points, from 55 percent in March to 47 percent in July, when 33 percent expressed distrust in her.

‘The vice president’s trust and performance ratings are both below majority level for the first time since November 2024, but not for the first time in the full trend series,’ Octa Research said.

‘Both ratings previously stood at 49 percent in November 2024. Nevertheless, her July 2026 trust rating of 47 percent and performance rating of 45 percent are the lowest national ratings recorded for her in the available series beginning in October 2022,’ it added.

Duterte’s drop in performance and trust ratings was ‘sharpest’ in Metro Manila and Balance Luzon, with performance ratings dropping by 15 percentage points and 10 percentage points, respectively, and trust ratings falling by 12 percentage points and 13 percentage points, respectively.

Meanwhile, her bailiwick, Mindanao, still gave her high ratings-90 percent for performance and 89 percent for trust.

Abi, a chef and model from Osun State, finished second overall and was named the Deputy Head of House.

This season, however, Big Brother introduced a major twist to the traditional HoH privileges. Unlike previous editions, the winner does not automatically move into the luxurious Head of House loft.

Instead, Chimsom was required to select a fellow housemate through a lucky dip to enjoy the accommodation. After drawing from a yellow lucky dip box, he picked Tram, who was granted access to the exclusive Head of House residence for the week. Tram later selected Sheba to share the apartment with him.

Although Chimsom will not stay in the Head of House loft, he retains the most significant advantage of the position-immunity from this week’s eviction-along with other leadership responsibilities and special privileges from Big Brother.

Before entering the house, Chimsom described himself as someone who remains calm under pressure and said authenticity would be his strategy throughout the competition.

‘The biggest strength I have is being myself,’ he said during his pre-show introduction, expressing confidence that viewers would connect with his genuine personality rather than a carefully crafted game plan.

As of the time of the announcement, the housemates were still taking part in the nomination process ahead of the first eviction of the season.
