FG arraigns Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, brother over protest disobedience

The Nigeria Police have taken Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, his brother Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and 10 other people to court. This follows the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest that took place in Abuja on Monday.

A court document confirming the charges was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, a former chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Nigeria (HRCN).

According to the police, the group is being charged for inciting disturbance and breaching public peace by disobeying a court order.

The police accused them of blocking traffic, denying people free movement, and chanting war songs while demanding Nnamdi Kanu’s release.

Earlier, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Force Public Relations Officer, said during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today that the suspects would be taken to court after investigations.

He explained that the police arrested Kanu’s brother, his lawyer, and six others near Transcorp area in Abuja because they insisted on entering restricted areas during the protest.

Hundeyin said:

‘We arrested them because they tried to force their way into restricted zones.

They are now at the State CID. After our investigation, anyone who broke the law or ignored the court order will face prosecution. We expect to complete this quickly, and they’ll be charged to court within 24 hours.’

The police earlier warned that anyone who violated the ban on public protests for Nnamdi Kanu would be arrested and prosecuted.

US-based “Nigerian” woman charged with murder after daughter dies of heat stroke in parked car

A 36-year-old mother with a Nigerian name has been charged with murder following the tragic death of her 9-year-old daughter, who was left inside a hot car for over eight hours in Texas, US authorities have confirmed.

Gbemisola Akayinode was arrested on Friday in connection with the death of her daughter, Oluwasikemi Akayinode, after the Harris County medical examiner ruled the case a homicide caused by hyperthermia (commonly known as heat stroke), according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

Oluwasikemi died on 1 July 2025, after being left alone in a parked vehicle during extreme summer temperatures reaching 99 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 37 degrees Celsius), while her mother worked a shift at a manufacturing plant in Galena Park, near Houston.

According to court documents, Gbemisola arrived at work around 5:45am and left Oluwasikemi in the car with food, water, ice cubes, a rechargeable fan, and the rear windows partially lowered. She also reportedly gave her daughter melatonin and saw her fall asleep in the back seat.

She did not check on her child until her shift ended at 1:53pm. Upon returning to the car, she found her daughter unresponsive and showing signs of heat-related distress. The child was pronounced dead shortly after emergency services arrived.

Investigators noted that the mother had taken her daughter to work on several previous occasions, claiming she could not afford childcare. However, the plant foreman was reportedly covering childcare costs at the time, contradicting her statements.

Authorities delayed filing charges until receiving the official autopsy report, which confirmed the cause of death as hyperthermia.

Hellen Ati reacts to Cubana Chief Priest’s school fees pledge

Hellen Ati, the alleged baby mama of Nigerian businessman, Cubana Chief Priest, has reacted to the entrepreneur’s pledge to pay tuition fees for 50 students in Clifford university.

Chief priest made this pledge at the convocation ceremony where Davido commissioned an hostel in honor of his late mother.

Hellen, on her social media page, demanded that Chief priest includes her son in the lost of students he will be supporting as he would be starting school soon.

‘Make it 52, your child is included. Your child is going to school next year, send child support. I don’t care whether you do DNA or not , your child is going to school next year,’ she stated.

UK’s biggest shoplifting crackdown: 32 Arrested, thousands of goods seized

In an unprecedented two-day blitz across London, the Metropolitan Police have dismantled what is being described as the largest organised shoplifting operation in UK history, arresting 32 suspects and recovering thousands of stolen goods worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Codenamed Operation Zoridon, the crackdown targeted over 120 stores suspected of buying and reselling items stolen from major retailers-from branded food and cosmetics to electronics and gaming consoles.

Nine shops were served with immediate closure orders as officers uncovered secret storage rooms packed with stolen merchandise.

At a single raid in Woolwich, police seized around 2,000 suspected stolen phones and discovered hidden compartments containing approximately £50,000 worth of gaming consoles. Investigators also found counterfeit Apple accessories and packaging.

Superintendent Luke Baldock, who led the operation, said the raids sent a ‘clear message’ to criminals:

‘If you profit from stolen goods, your licence will be revoked and your business shut down. Shoplifting is not a victimless crime, it funds organised gangs and fuels violence.’

The Metropolitan Police deployed more than 300 officers, working with Trading Standards, Border Force, and the London Fire Brigade to execute search warrants and licensing checks across multiple boroughs.

Backed by Mayor Sadiq Khan, the operation reflects London’s growing push to curb organised retail theft, which has driven up prices and endangered shop workers.

‘This operation sends a strong message – if you shoplift or trade in stolen goods, you will be caught and prosecuted,’ Khan said.

Police Minister Sarah Jones also praised the move, pledging to end the culture of impunity for retail crime.

‘For too long, shop workers have faced theft and abuse from offenders who thought they were untouchable. This stops now.’

To track stolen merchandise, officers used SelectaDNA technology, a synthetic liquid marker that uniquely tags items, allowing police dogs to sniff out stolen goods and trace them back to retailers.

The crackdown follows months of surveillance and intelligence-gathering on organised crime rings across London.

The Met said it has already solved 92% more shoplifting cases this year, thanks to its renewed neighbourhood policing strategy and close collaboration with local businesses.

Chief Executive of the Association of Convenience Stores, James Lowman, hailed the operation as ‘a model for effective enforcement.’

‘These illicit shops fuel crime and anti-social behaviour. Shutting them down delivers immediate results for communities.’

With arrests, closures, and seizures mounting, Operation Zoridon stands as a major statement of intent, London’s retail thieves and their criminal networks are running out of hiding places.

Why fortifying ultra-processed foods won’t solve Nigeria’s nutrition crisis

Food fortification is a well-established public health intervention designed to address widespread micronutrient deficiencies in populations. Over time, this strategy has proven remarkably effective in tackling several serious health conditions. One of the most notable examples is the addition of iodine to salt, which successfully helped combat goitre, a painful swelling of the thyroid gland caused by iodine deficiency. Likewise, fortifying milk with vitamin D was pivotal in conquering rickets, a disease that weakens the bones of children.

Typically, the implementation of fortification programs follows one of two models. These models are either mandatory or voluntary in nature. Under a mandatory framework, governments legally require certain food categories to be fortified with specific nutrients to remedy major public health concerns. The addition of iodine to salt, or the fortification of flour with folic acid or vitamin A to prevent neural tube defects are common examples of this model.

By contrast, the voluntary model of fortification presents a different approach. In this case, food manufacturers may choose to fortify their products as a way to enhance brand value. This practice is commonly seen in consumer goods such as breakfast cereals, beverages, and bouillon cubes, which are often fortified with iron and B vitamins.

In recent years, fortification has extended into the realm of ultra-processed foods (UPFs), a development that has generated considerable debate. Proponents argue that since people, particularly in developed countries, obtain a significant portion of their daily calories from UPFs, fortifying these products can help ensure that populations still receive some essential vitamins and minerals they might otherwise miss by not consuming enough healthy, natural foods.

However, this logic collapses when applied to developing contexts like Nigeria, where traditional and indigenous diets still dominate food tables. In such settings, fortifying UPFs can actually make things worse by accelerating a trend known as a nutrition transition, in which people gradually replace their healthy local meals with prepackaged and unhealthy options. This shift increases the population’s vulnerability to diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and obesity.

Furthermore, the idea of adding a few micronutrients to an otherwise unhealthy ultra processed product to make it nutritious creates what scholars describe as a health halo effect. Consumers, misled by labels proclaiming ‘fortified with vitamins’ may assume such foods are beneficial and consume them in excess, even though they often contain high amounts of sugar, salt, and harmful fats. This misconception contributes to the growing rates of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic conditions, ultimately aggravating existing nutrition and public health issues rather than solving them.

More critically, fortifying UPFs is a band-aid solution that fails to address the underlying structural drivers of poor diets, especially those shaped by corporate food systems. It allows industry actors to profit from a public health crisis instead of confronting its root causes, which includes the limited access to affordable, wholesome foods. While fortified UPFs may contain added vitamins, they often lack other beneficial components found in whole foods, such as fibre, antioxidants, and a diverse range of naturally occurring micronutrients.

Additionally, widespread fortification of multiple food products can lead to the over-consumption of certain nutrients, especially if a person also takes dietary supplements. The excessive intake of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A can have adverse health effects, including teratogenic risks during pregnancy.

In summary, while food fortification remains a valuable public health tool, its application to UPFs presents a paradox. It may offer limited benefits in contexts of severe deficiency but simultaneously deepens unhealthy consumption patterns and facilitates corporate capture of nutrition policy. In Nigeria, where indigenous diets rich in natural micronutrients are not only culturally central but remain the most widely consumed sources of nourishment, promoting the fortification of UPFs could inadvertently legitimise junk food as public good. Instead of fortifying the problem, public health efforts should focus on protecting and expanding access to affordable, whole, and minimally processed foods that truly sustain life.

’More classics than Michael Jackson,’- Sir Shina Peters makes bold claims

Nigerian Juju music veteran, Oluwashina Akanbi Peters also known as Sir Shina Peters, has claimed that he has more classics than late American pop star, Michael Jackson.

While speaking on the Honest Bunch podcast, Shina Peters spoke about the importance of having evergreen songs even after leaving the limelight.

He stated that he has four classics, stressing that it surpasses that of the late pop star.

‘The only thing you can show for showbiz at the end is how many evergreens you have produced. To my credit, I have four evergreens. Even Michael Jackson has just two; Of The World and Thriller. So, if I have four, I am accomplished,’ he expressed.

Four police officers in serious trouble over use of excessive force

The Adamawa State Police Command says four of its officers have been arrested and detained for alleged indiscipline and violation of standard operational procedures.

This was disclosed on Tuesday in Yola by Suleiman Nguroje, the command’s spokesperson.

According to the statement, the officers involved used excessive force and fired shots into the air while effecting the arrest of a suspect.

The incident reportedly took place on 14 October in Sabon Gari quarters, within Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, condemned the unprofessional conduct displayed by the officers and reassured the public that justice would be served.

He appealed to members of the community to remain calm and assured that the police would handle the matter in accordance with the law.

CP Morris also directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the IGP’s X Squad to carry out a thorough and diligent investigation into the incident.

OAU students raise alarm over incessant robberies

The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has cried out over what it described as a ‘climate of fear and blood’ following a recent wave of armed robberies targeting students within and around the university community.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the SRC demanded urgent intervention from the Osun State Government and security agencies to end what they called ‘the reign of terror’ against Great Ife students.

According to the statement, another attack occurred late Monday night at Oreoluwa Hostel in Moremi Estate, where students were reportedly dispossessed of their gadgets and valuables, with some sustaining injuries.

‘This is not an isolated event, it is a continuation of a frightening trend that has persisted for far too long while those responsible for protecting lives and property fold their arms in shameful silence,’ the SRC lamented.

The student leaders accused the state government of gross negligence, questioning the use of security funds meant to safeguard residents of Ile-Ife.

‘We are not unaware that security votes running into millions every month are being allocated to the Governor of Osun State, who doubles as the Chief Security Officer of the State. Yet, the streets of Ile-Ife remain unsafe, and our students continue to bleed. If these funds are truly being used for security, then where is the security?’ the statement queried.

The SRC further called on the Osun State Governor, the Commissioner of Police, and the Divisional Police Officer of Moore Division to take immediate and decisive action to secure students both on and off campus.

‘Our safety must no longer be treated as a favour, it is our right,’ the council declared.

The union also urged the university management to prioritize the construction of more on-campus hostels, saying the lack of accommodation forces thousands of students to live off-campus where they are vulnerable to attacks.

‘Safety cannot be guaranteed when thousands of students are forced to live outside campus due to inadequate accommodation,’ the statement added.

While commiserating with the latest victims, the SRC vowed to continue speaking out and organizing until students can ‘live and learn in peace again.’

‘We demand action. We demand protection. We demand justice,’ the statement concluded.

Nigeria’s Climate Sentinel: How NiMet is changing the forecast

Last week, Nigeria GovTech Public Service Awards 2025, recongised NiMet as the ‘Best Federal MDA in Open Data Excellence.’ In addition, the Director General/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, was honoured with the Distinguished GovTech Trailblazer’s Award. A combination of the two awards, serve as lasting testimonies that NiMet and its leadership are at the front seat, among agencies driving Nigeria’s digital agenda. They also serve as very loud testimony and acknowledgement of the agency’s outstanding performance in data transparency and digital transformation.

Within the same period, Anosike was also named as one of the Top 100 Environmental and Sustainability Professionals during awards organized by Environment Africa Magazine.

According to the organisers, Anosike earned the recognition, for his forward-thinking work in climate resilience, particularly his efforts to ensure that weather and climate information directly supports vulnerable communities, critical sectors, and long-term national planning.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), has risen from relative obscurity to become one of best performing federal government agencies in Nigeria. The agency is now a household name in the country while at the same time, receiving accolades and laurels from several international publics and stakeholders, especially organizations that are concerned with weather and climate related matters.

These achievements are coming, in addition to unprecedented welfare initiative of the current management for staff of the agency, who hitherto, were denied training opportunities and other benefits.

Since he assumed office less than two years ago, more than 1,700 staff have benefitted from different categories of trainings to equip them with requisite skills and knowledge to operate a modern institution that is knowledge-based and critical to the overall wellbeing of the nation.

Before Professor Charles Anosike was appointed as the Director General/CEO, of NiMet in December 2023, the agency’s performance was rated low, caused mainly by factors like lack of leadership drive, slow and ineffective migration to modern technologies and a demoralized workforce that were denied series of entitlements and claims.

The current Grade-A performance of NiMet and the various recognitions the agency and its management are getting, are attributable to a triangular chain that include deliberate and concerted efforts to key into President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda which hammers on providing best quality service to the people; strict supervisory approach by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Management, Barrister Festus Keyamo, SAN, who does not joke when it comes to compliance to highest operational standards and the managerial acumen of Prof. Anosike, who has deployed his knowledge and talents to drive required changes through proactive approach that have resulted in modernization of operations.

With a combination of several ‘Cs’ of leadership- including competence, Courage, Consistency, Commitment, Character, Communication and Clarity, Anosike has leveraged digital innovations and strategic partnerships which he has built with local and international institutions, to close critical gaps and achieve remarkable milestones in less than two years.

Under Prof. Anosike’s management, NiMet is undergoing series of transformations that have ensured that Nigeria’s weather services are more accurate, reliable, and impactful than ever before. Through the modernization efforts, there is currently, improved service delivery, effective communication through various synergy and partnership with the media which helps to successfully convey early warning to NiMet’s information consumers.

Among the technologies that have been adopted by the management is the Electronic Flight Folder (e-Flight Folder) for the aviation sector. This digital tool provides pilots with real-time weather updates, directly enhancing safety and operational efficiency at Nigerian airports, many of which have also achieved ISO quality management certification under Anosike’s tenure.

Also, Prof. Anosike’s management has prioritized strengthening early warning systems to help Nigerians adapt to a changing climate. The agency actively works with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and other partners to improve the communication of climate information to the public. According to the NiMet boss, these collaborations are vital in building a climate-resilient society and mitigating the impact of extreme weather. The agency has also been playing crucial role in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by providing essential data to combat desertification and restore land affected by drought, thereby establishing itself as an agency with clear understanding that its responsibilities go beyond daily weather reports, but include long-term climate and environmental protection.

To that effect also, NiMet monitors major rivers and basins that shape the health of freshwater ecosystems, forests, and dryland lands.

in the last three months in particular , the management of NiMet has taken several steps to further strengthen the agency’s capacity to, not only continue to deliver high quality services, but improve upon its standards. Several partnerships have been entered into with sister government agencies, universities and research institutions within Nigeria and across the world. The agency also participated in stakeholders’ forum and addressed gatherings meant to dialogue with the media to foster better understanding and improve working relationship.

On August 11, NiMet signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), which was a strategic partnership to drive climate-resilient agriculture across the continent aimed at ensuring that both organizations work together to develop climate-smart weather tools, build capacity for farmers, and promote technologies that strengthen agricultural value chains against the impacts of climate change.

‘For agriculture to be truly climate-resilient, access to reliable weather and climate information is essential. This MoU enables us to combine our expertise with AATF to deliver impactful solutions to farmers,’ Anosike said after signing the MoU.

Also in August, NiMet, Sahel, IRI and Gates Foundation launched ENACTS Initiative to strengthen access to climate data. The two-day event, held in Abuja under the Building Agricultural Systems Resilience in Nigeria Project financed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation also featured a Project Review Workshop with stakeholders across agriculture, health, water resources, blue economy and disaster management, among others.

ENACTS integrates ground-based observations with satellite data to deliver reliable, user-friendly climate information products. A highlight of the launch was the unveiling of NiMet’s Maproom portal, an online platform offering over 40 years of high-resolution climate data at a 4km grid resolution.

Another significant milestone within the period under review was successful launch of a centralised Secure Aviation Data Information Service (SADIS) Application Programming Interface (API) platform aimed at boosting Aviation safety efficiency in Nigeria.

The development was a significant step in the modernisation of the country’s aviation weather services with Nigeria becoming a trailblazer in Africa. The country therefore has assumed a leading role in deploying advanced meteorological technologies that enhance flight safety and operational efficiency.

The SADIS API, operated by the United Kingdom Met Office under the supervision of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), grants programmatic access to the World Area Forecast System (WAFS) datasets alongside other vital meteorological information.

The new system replaces the outdated SADIS File Transfer Protocol (FTP), ushering in a modern, System-Wide Information Management (SWIM)-compliant platform capable of delivering high-resolution weather data in real time.

By adopting the SADIS API, aviation stakeholders in Nigeria now benefit from secure and instant access to key forecasts, weather charts, and observational data.

At the stakeholders forum in Lagos on Wednesday September 11, with the theme ‘Early warnings: Raising awareness on climate risks and promoting early action,’ NiMet said it is providing timely information to critical gathering of the economy such as aviation, agriculture, marine and blue economy, energy, health to achieve disaster risk reduction.

The gathering it said, serves as a collaborative space for diverse stakeholders to exchange insights, foster partnerships, and advance proactive strategies aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s resilience against the escalating impacts of climate change.

Then stakeholders’ forum was followed two days later with Prof. Anosike, calling for collaboration to integrate quality weather and climate data into sustainability reporting. He made the call at an Investor Roundtable hosted by the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) to commemorate the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) Preparers Readiness Programme. He also highlighted the critical role of climate data in informed decision-making.

Extreme weather, he stated raises significant risks to financial institutions, including increased costs, physical risks, and liquidity issues, adding that climate disasters can impact borrowers’ ability to repay loans, leading to increased credit risk, and cause market risks as asset values decline. He therefore urged financial regulators and stakeholders to integrate climate risk management into financial reporting, ensuring that sustainability reporting is informed by accurate climate data.

NiMet also entered into partnership with the Kingdom of Morocco on AI-Based Weather Forecast, Early Warning Systems. At the event Anosike and his

Moroccan counterpart, Mohammed Dhkissi, pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation between the two institutions, particularly in the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven weather forecasting and early warning systems for enhanced climate resilience.

The pledge was made when Prof. Anosike paid a working visit to the Directorate of General Meteorology in the Kingdom of Morocco. The visit took place on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations Systematic Observation Financing Facility (SOFF) workshop for Peer Advisors and Implementing Entities in Casablanca. Parts of the discussions include implementation of the WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) Centre in Abuja, the exchange of expertise and support for the establishment of an Instrument Calibration Centre, as well as joint initiatives in data management, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and education and training.

They also agreed to promote bilingual capacity building in French and English to reach a wider audience, deepen cooperation in Agricultural Meteorology and stakeholder engagement, and share knowledge and experience in the implementation of SOFF Peer Advisory Services, Numerical Weather Prediction, and the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in numerical modelling.

Even though the list of activities are inexhaustible, Prof. Anosike, in his determination to further get NiMet to do more exploits for the benefit of Nigerian people as well as security of the nation, led a team of the agency’s management to a public hearing on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 with the aim of advancing reasons why the NiMet Act No. 29, 2022 should be amended.

He said that weather and climate have a direct and far-reaching impact on virtually every sector of the Nigerian economy – aviation, maritime, agriculture, construction, oil and gas, telecommunications, and disaster risk reduction, among others.

He said that although the NiMet Act was amended as recently as 2022 to strengthen the Agency’s legal and operational framework, the realities of implementation have revealed some gaps that hinder its full effectiveness. In particular, challenges remain in the areas of cost recovery, rulemaking, and compliance and enforcement.

‘We must acknowledge that no law, however well-conceived, can anticipate every future challenge at the time of enactment. Legal frameworks must therefore remain flexible and responsive to evolving needs, especially in rapidly changing, data-driven sectors such as meteorology. Against this backdrop, it is pertinent to note that NiMet has made significant progress over the years in enhancing the quality, accuracy, and reach of its services. Nevertheless, to keep pace with the growing demands of Nigeria’s dynamic economy and to ensure the long-term sustainability of its operations, it is imperative that the Agency be equipped with a strengthened legal framework that addresses existing gaps and aligns with both national development priorities and international best practices. Purpose of this presentation.’

He said that the purpose of the presentation was simply to justify the amendments proposed in the NiMet Bill, 2025. Particularly, those geared towards the establishment of a cost recovery framework that ensures the sustainable delivery of critical meteorological services to sectors such as marine, construction and telecommunications. ‘These amendments are intended to: Strengthen national meteorological infrastructure and resilience; Enhance safety, efficiency, and planning across sectors; Ensure that users of specialized meteorological services in the stated sectors pay costs associated with the provision of such services.’

At the end of Anosike’s presentation, the lawmakers praised him for the giant strides being recorded by NiMet under his leadership and pledged to speed up the process to ensure that whatever necessary legislative actions needed to add impetus to the agency to achieve its set goals are provided without delays.
