The South African Football Association (SAFA) has announced the reappointment of three-time African champion Pitso Mosimane as Bafana Bafana head coach.
Mosimane previously served as assistant coach to Carlos Alberto Parreira before taking over as head coach following the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
While his first tenure with Bafana Bafana produced mixed results, the years that followed elevated him into one of the most accomplished coaches on the African continent.
SAFA’s decision marks the return of a familiar figure to the national team setup, more than a decade after Mosimane’s first spell in charge.
Mosimane’s immediate attention will be the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where securing a place at the continental showpiece will be a priority.
His success with Mamelodi Sundowns changed the landscape of South African club football.
Under Mosimane, Sundowns established themselves as a dominant force domestically and became African champions in 2016 when they lifted the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League title.
A move to Egyptian giants Al Ahly saw the former CAF African Coach of the Year add two more TotalEnergies CAF Champions League titles to his collection in 2020 and 2021.
He guided the Cairo club to three successive continental finals and further strengthened his reputation as a coach capable of delivering results under the pressure that comes with managing one of Africa’s biggest clubs.
His journey has also taken him to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran, adding further experience to a coaching career that has been shaped by different football cultures and demanding environments.
Mosimane takes up the role of guiding the former African champions, having spent much of the last decade competing for continental honours.
