NETBALL-COMMONWEALTH-Sunshine Girls edge Scotland to stay in medal contention

Jamaica pulled off a tense 45-43 victory over Scotland to remain on track for a semifinal spot at the 23rd Commonwealth Games here on Wednesday.

It was the Sunshine Girls’ second straight win, and third in fourth games, and kept them in contention for a place in the last four of the competition. Jamaica started well and led 15-9 after the first quarter, but urged on by a loud home crowd, Scotland, who are ranked 10th in the world, outscored their opponents 28-20 between the second and third quarters and led early in the fourth quarter before the experience of the Jamaicans gave them the edge.

Heading into the final period with the scores locked at 35, Jamaica through the efforts of Azara Wilmot and Shanice Beckford, outscored the home side 10-8 to hold on for a tight victory.

Wilmot, in only her third game with the senior team, came off the bench to score 28 goals from 35 attempts, Beckford netted 15 goals from 18 attempts and Rhea Dixon scored two from four.

Emma Barrie scored 22 goals from 27 attempts for Scotland and Niamh McCall scored 21 from 26 attempts.
