SAILING-ST.VINCENT-Young Vincentian sailor makes waves at first World Championship

Vincentian sailor Kai Marks-Dasent has officially arrived on the international stage, completing his first-ever World Championship campaign, and doing so as one of the youngest competitors in the highly competitive 15-18 age bracket.

Competing in the ILCA 6 class at the World Championships, held from August 11 to 19 in Denmark, the teenage sailor finished 74th in the Under-17 fleet and 290th overall among a deep and talented international field.

Marks-Dasent’s journey to Denmark was no small feat. He travelled straight from the Central American and Caribbean Games in the Dominican Republic, jumping from one major regatta to another without missing a beat.

The quick turnaround, combined with challenging conditions, tested the young sailor’s resilience from the outset.

‘Going to two regattas back to back and racing in winds up to 30 knots was a real challenge, but I learnt a lot, and I can see what I need to work on to become a better sailor,’ Marks-Dasent reflected.

While the results may not have placed him at the very top of the leaderboard, the experience gained is invaluable. Competing against the best young sailors in the world has given Marks-Dasent a clear benchmark of where he stands, and where he needs to go.

With three more years of eligibility in this age category, the Vincentian has time on his side. This first World Championship is just the beginning of a long-term development plan, and his next major test is already on the horizon.

Marks-Dasent is set to compete at the World Sailing Youth World Championships in Portugal this December, where he will once again line up against the globe’s elite youth sailors.

For now, this debut World Championship campaign represents an important first step on the international circuit, one that lays the foundation for a journey aimed squarely at the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, where Marks-Dasent hopes to one day represent St. Vincent and the Grenadines on the world’s biggest stage.
