Middle Corridor opens new route for Kazakh exports

“Kazakhstan Temir Zholy” (KTZ) has organized the first-ever multimodal shipment of mineral fertilizers from the city of Ekibastuz to the United Kingdom, AzerNEWS reports.

The shipment is being carried via the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), also known as the Middle Corridor, using both rail and maritime transport. The cargo will travel through Kazakhstan, across the Caspian Sea, and onward through Azerbaijan and Georgia before being transported by sea from the ports of Poti and Batumi to the Port of Felixstowe in the United Kingdom.

The new route will enable Kazakhstan’s fertilizer producers to increase exports to the UK market. The use of the Middle Corridor will also help diversify logistics routes and ensure more reliable cargo deliveries.

KTZ has been steadily expanding the geographical reach of its international transportation services. The company previously organized the export of Kazakh products along the Ekibastuz-Miami route. The latest shipment marks another step in expanding the delivery of Kazakh products to European markets via the Middle Corridor.

Foreign Ministry: Russia-Armenia matters should not be tied to Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ayhan Hajizada said that Russia-Armenia issues should no longer be discussed in a way that links them to Azerbaijan, AzerNEWS reports.

Hajizada made the remarks in response to a question from local media regarding comments by Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, on the Karabakh region and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

According to Hajizada, Zakharova’s latest remarks concerning the former Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict distort reality.

“The Karabakh region has always been recognized by the international community, including the Russian Federation, as an integral part of Azerbaijan,” Hajizada noted.

He stressed that attempts to repeatedly raise the issue of applying CSTO mechanisms to Azerbaijan’s sovereign territories that had been under Armenian occupation for 30 years, and to link this issue to whether the Karabakh region was recognized or not by Armenia, are not only contrary to Russia’s official position regarding Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region but are also completely unfounded.

“Azerbaijan restored its territorial integrity and sovereignty in accordance with the requirements of international law, thereby resolving the former conflict. In this context, the practice of commenting on issues related to Russia-Armenia relations in connection with Azerbaijan should come to an end,” the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized.

On July 27, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, speaking at the Gvardeysk youth forum, said that although Armenia had called for the CSTO mechanism to be used, questions remained over who and what it would be applied to.

Zakharova argued that the CSTO’s collective security mechanism could not have been used because “Nagorno-Karabakh” was not recognized by Armenia either as its own territory or as an independent entity.

Culture Ministry strengthens cooperation with Writers’ Union [PHOTOS]

Azerbaijan’s Culture Minister, Adil Karimli, has met with Anar Rzayev, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Writers’ Union and People’s Writer, to discuss the development of the country’s literary sector and ways to strengthen cooperation between the Ministry of Culture and the Writers’ Union, AzerNEWS reports.

During the meeting the parties discussed the development of the literary process in the country, support for contemporary Azerbaijani literature, the improvement of library services, the promotion of a reading culture, the expansion of creative opportunities for young writers, and the further development of cooperation in these areas.

The discussion also included an exchange of views on the selection of literary works for films produced under state commission, the preparation of screenplays, the promotion of Azerbaijani literature, and the production of films dedicated to the lives and works of prominent Azerbaijani authors.

The parties noted that strengthening cooperation between state institutions and public organizations would make a significant contribution to the development of the nation’s literature, the promotion of a reading culture, and the enrichment of the country’s cultural life.

The Azerbaijan Writers’ Union (AYU) is the country’s largest public literary organization, bringing together writers, poets, translators, literary critics, and publicists. It was established on June 13, 1934, during the First Congress of Azerbaijani Writers in Baku, following a reorganization of earlier literary associations that had operated in the 1920s. Its headquarters are located in Baku.

The origins of the organization date back to 1923, when Azerbaijani writers sought to unite under a single literary association. One of the first such groups was the “Ildirim” (Lightning) literary society, followed by the “Qizil Q?l?ml?r” (Golden Pens) society, founded in 1925. These organizations played an important role in promoting literary activity and eventually led to the establishment of the Azerbaijan Writers’ Union in 1934.

The Union’s primary mission is to support the development of Azerbaijani literature, encourage the creative work of writers, particularly young authors, promote reading culture, strengthen ties between writers and readers, and introduce Azerbaijani literature to international audiences. It also seeks to unite Azerbaijani writers living abroad around the country’s literary heritage and foster literary translation and cultural exchange.

Today, the Azerbaijan Writers’ Union includes specialized sections dedicated to prose, poetry, drama, literary criticism, and translation. It also has regional branches across Azerbaijan, including in Ganja, Lankaran, Shaki, Shirvan, Sumgayit, Guba, and Nakhchivan, as well as representative offices in several countries to strengthen ties with the Azerbaijani literary diaspora.

Legendary footballer Pirlo’s Italy coaching offer ruled out over alleged links with Russia

Former Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo is no longer being considered for the role of Italy’s national team head coach following criticism over his commercial ties to Russian betting company Fonbet, AzerNEWS reports.

The 2006 FIFA World Cup winner became a global ambassador for Fonbet in 2025 and later traveled to Moscow in May 2026 to attend a company event alongside former Italy teammate Marco Materazzi.

The visit sparked criticism from Italian politicians, who argued that representing a Russian company while Russia continues its war against Ukraine was incompatible with leading the Italian national football team.

Pirlo maintained that his partnership with Fonbet was strictly commercial and had no political significance.

Despite his explanation, mounting public and political pressure reportedly prompted the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) to remove him from the shortlist for the national team’s head coaching position.

Italian media reported that the controversy surrounding Pirlo’s ties to the Russian bookmaker ultimately ended his chances of taking charge of the Azzurri.

Azerbaijan, South Korea deepen cooperation on digital finance [PHOTOS]

On July 28, Azerbaijani Deputy Minister of Finance Himalay Mamishov met with a delegation from the Korea Fiscal Information Service (KFIS), AzerNEWS reports.

According to the Ministry of Finance’s Press Service, the meeting focused on reforms aimed at the digital transformation of public financial management in Azerbaijan, the study of Korea’s advanced experience in this field, and the design of digital financial control and treasury systems, as well as the preparation of a roadmap for their implementation.

The project is expected to include an assessment of existing public financial management processes and information systems, the study of international best practices, and the development of modern digital solutions tailored to Azerbaijan’s needs.

Mamishov said that digital transformation in public finance management is one of the important directions of institutional reforms being carried out in the country. He highly appreciated the expert and consulting support of the Korean side and emphasized the importance of continuing cooperation towards concrete results, knowledge and technology transfer, increasing institutional capacity, and forming a modern digital public finance management model.

It was noted that in April this year, a delegation from the Azerbaijani Ministry of Finance visited the Republic of Korea, where it studied the country’s experience in digital public financial management based on the dBrain+ system.

Earlier, during a meeting between Azerbaijani Finance Minister Sahil Babayev and a KFIS delegation led by its President Seok Ho Yoon, a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the digitalization of public financial management was signed.

As part of this cooperation, Azerbaijan plans to draw on Korea’s experience with the dBrain+ system to establish a unified Digital Public Finance Information System, centralize financial data, and improve transparency, accountability and efficiency in public financial management.

During the meeting, the application of artificial intelligence-based solutions in public finance management, the formation of data-based decision-making mechanisms, budget forecasting and early identification of fiscal risks, the improvement of audit and control infrastructure, as well as strengthening the cybersecurity framework of public financial information systems were identified as priority areas for future cooperation.

At the end of the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Digital Finance Center of the Ministry of Finance and KFIS on “Designing and preparing a roadmap for Azerbaijan’s digital financial control and treasury systems”.

Neither the SDF nor the Autonomous Administration has officially confirmed the reported timeline or publicly announced plans for dissolution.
