Cyprus antiquity repatriated from the UK

A Cypriot antiquity from the Cypro-Archaic period (750-475 BC) was handed over to the Cyprus High Commission in London last week, the Department of Antiquities said on Tuesday in a press release.

The handover ceremony was held at the premises of The Cotswold Auction Company in Cirencester.

The antiquity was identified in an online auction by Archaeological Officers of the Department of Antiquities responsible for monitoring the illegal trafficking of Cypriot antiquities on the internet, and was withdrawn following consultation with the auction house.

The Cyprus High Commission was represented by Marios Theocharous, Cultural Counsellor, who received the object on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus.

During the handover, Theocharous expressed the deep emotion and honour of the Republic of Cyprus for the return of yet another piece of Cyprus’ long-standing cultural heritage.

‘We are not simply transferring an object, but a piece of our collective memory, which is returning to the land that gave birth to it’, he noted.

Niall Fry, Auctioneer/Valuer of The Cotswold Auction Company, together with colleagues, welcomed the Cypriot delegation and handed over the object, noting the company’s commitment to proper cooperation and respect for cultural heritage.

Fry congratulated the Republic of Cyprus for its continuous and systematic efforts to identify and repatriate antiquities, emphasising that the collaboration between the two sides was flawless and exemplary.

The antiquity, a ceramic juglet of Black-on-Red II (V) approximately 7 cm in height, was safely transported to the Cyprus High Commission in London, where it will be temporarily kept until its transfer to Cyprus by staff of the Department of Antiquities.

This repatriation forms part of the ongoing and uninterrupted actions of the Republic of Cyprus (Department of Antiquities, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cyprus Police) for the protection and safeguarding of our cultural heritage, as well as for the return of antiquities that have been exported illegally from the country, the press release concludes.

No solution can be imposed on Ukraine, Cyprus President says at Coalition of the Willing videoconference

President Nikos Christodoulides reiterated Cyprus’ principled position that no solution can be imposed on Ukraine, during a videoconference of the Coalition of the Willing on Tuesday afternoon, according to a written statement by Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis.

According to the Spokesperson, President Christodoulides participated in the Coalition of the Willing videoconference on Ukraine, which followed Monday’s ‘important’ European Council videoconference, also attended by the Cyprus President, ‘at a time when unity and strategic convergence within the European family are imperative.’

During the discussions, President Christodoulides noted that the Republic of Cyprus welcomes the heightened diplomatic engagement of the United States in efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine, as well as Washington’s ongoing consultations with Ukraine and European partners, he notes.

‘President Christodoulides reiterated the Republic of Cyprus’ principled position that no solution can be imposed on Ukraine,’ the Spokesperson said. At the same time, he adds, ‘issues directly concerning the European Union must be the result of collective deliberation and institutional decision-making within the Union itself’.

He added that President Christodoulides reaffirmed Cyprus’ full respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, a position ‘fully aligned’ with Cyprus’ own historical experience and long-standing principles, Letymbiotis notes.

The President also ‘underlined the need for a decisive response to attempts by third countries, particularly NATO member states, to circumvent EU and US sanctions’, he said. The credibility and effectiveness of the international sanctions framework depend on common stance, transparency and consistency by all involved, the Spokesperson said.

Education an integral part of Cyprus’ EU Presidency work, President says

Education is an integral part of the work we will drive forward during our EU Presidency beginning January 1st, focusing on the new Erasmus+ in the upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework, on the EU Youth Strategy 2025-27, as well as on the Union of Skills, an area we as Government have been working on since day one, matching our education system and skills with the labour market, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Monday.

Addressing the 46th Cyprus Business School Graduation Ceremony, the President told graduates that the knowledge, skills and values they have acquired will serve as their professional and moral compass, a foundation for lifelong learning, social responsibility and meaningful engagement.

“The most successful people are those who never stop learning, who continue to grow and who use their skills to uplift those around them as they rise,” he said.

He also told the graduates that nothing about today was given to them but they earned it and have reached this milestone through years of hard work, constant effort, self-discipline, commitment, and perseverance.

“But today is also a moment of deep gratitude. Because no one arrives here alone. Behind every graduate stands a family who believed in you, supported you, and celebrated your every step. Professors who guided you, and inspired you. Who at times believed in you perhaps more than you believed in yourselves. And an institution that thoroughly prepared you for the journey ahead”, he said.

The President also said in his address that the Cyprus Business School has long been a contributor to the Cyprus’ higher education landscape adding that with its pledge to quality education and international engagement, it prepares students not only for professional success, but also for active citizenship in a rapidly evolving global society.

He assured that education is at the forefront of the Government’s work adding that with reform being at the core of all they do as a Government, they are investing in quality, equity, and internationalization, as a commitment to the young people of our country.

“In this context, the Government, through the Ministry of Education, has developed the Strategic Plan for the Upgrading of Higher Education. Our objectives include the modernisation of Higher Education, strengthening the alignment of Higher Education with the labour market, and establishing Cyprus as a vibrant and competitive international center for Higher Education”, he added.

President Christodoulides noted also that they want to ensure that every student, no matter their starting point, has the opportunity to thrive and shape a meaningful future.

“Cyprus’ higher education institutions play a crucial role in this effort, offering education that is both locally grounded and globally relevant, and deeply connected to the needs and aspirations of today’s youth,” he concluded.

UNOCT conference in Limassol discusses combating terrorist financing

Ways to combat terrorist financing were discussed during a conference of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) hosted in the coastal city of Limassol, Cyprus.

Parliamentarian Rita Superman – Chair of the Policy Dialogue of the UN Coordination Mechanism for Parliamentary Assemblies on Counter-Terrorism and PAM Rapporteur on Counter-Terrorism said that the evidence is clear that terrorist groups exploit new technologies, such as cryptocurrencies, crowdfunding platforms, and informal money transfer, to finance their malicious operations.

She added that they are also increasingly relying on the Dark Web to conduct ‘trade-based money laundering’ and avoid detection.

“As parliamentarians, we need to make sure that our national strategies are up-to-date, consistent, and connected with regional and international instruments, while also focusing on enhancing the processes of harmonisation and coordination among investigation authorities, prosecutors, financial intelligence units, and law enforcement authorities”, she said.

The Cyprus MP also noted that key priorities include building stronger risk assessment mechanisms, strengthening cross-border coordination, regulating vulnerable sectors, and improving operational capacity to track new technologies and online fundraising.

“It is our responsibility to ensure that national legislations are aligned with global standards by relying on comprehensive international frameworks, such as the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Recommendations”, Superman said.

In her speech, read by a representative, Guadalupe Megre, Chief of the Special Projects and Innovation Branch at UNOCT noted that terrorist organizations increasingly rely on diversified and sophisticated methods such as virtual assets, online crowdfunding platforms, informal transfer systems, and the exploitation of human trafficking and smuggling network, in order to generate, move, and conceal funds. These trends demand comprehensive, coordinated, and accountable responses.

She also underlined that today’s dialogue also supports the alignment of national frameworks with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Recommendations, particularly those concerning criminalization, targeted financial sanctions, and the safeguarding of the non-profit sector.

Megre went on to say that MPs play a decisive role in ensuring that domestic legislation remains aligned with international obligation, that counter-financing measures are transparent and proportionate, the rights of individuals and civil society are protected and that coordination across financial, judicial, and security institutions is effective and accountable.

She also reaffirmed UNOCT’s strong commitment to its partnership with parliaments and parliamentary assemblies, noting that their engagement is essential for building transparent, accountable, and effective counter-terrorism frameworks that protect societies and uphold the rule of law.

Sergio Piazzi, Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) said in his speech that over the last three years, the Coordinating Mechanism on the issue, through its Policy Dialogues, has addressed a wide range of issues, closely following and monitoring the evolving trends of terrorism across regions.

“Thanks to the evolving focuses of the Policy Dialogues, the Coordination Mechanism has asserted itself as a consolidated platform for exchange that recognizes the vital role of parliaments and parliamentarians in supporting the actions of the international community in the global fight against terrorism”, he said.

Piazzi noted that the focus this year turns to the financing of terrorist operations, a challenge that has grown more complex with the rapid development of AI and emerging technologies misused by terrorist and criminal groups to expand their activities.

He went on to say that through continued cooperation, the MPs can ensure that the Mechanism remains an effective tool to address the evolving threats, as we share best practices and work towards harmonizing national legislations with international resolutions and guiding principles.

On behalf of the Cyprus Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, MP Andreas Pasiourtides said that today’s session of UNOCT has particular importance, as combating the financing of terrorism constitutes a top challenge for all societies in a global environment adding that knowledge exchange and joint efforts are our strongest defenses.

Vice-President of the Qatar Advisory Council, which co-finances UNOCT, Abdulla Nasser Al Subaey addressed the participants via a video message.

The 8th Meeting of the Coordinating Mechanism of Parliamentary Assemblies of UNOCT is set to take place Wednesday.

Ambassador reaffirmes Cyprus’ ‘unwavering commitment’ to combating human trafficking

Cyprus Special Envoy for Multilateralism Ambassador Andreas Kakouris reaffirmed Cyprus’ ‘unwavering commitment’ to combating human trafficking, addressing on Monday the High-Level Meeting on the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons.

Marking the 15th anniversary of the Plan of Action, Kakouris noted that it was ‘a great honor for Cyprus, along with Tajikistan, to co-facilitate’ the process leading to the 2025 Political Declaration, which he said ‘reiterates our collective commitment to combat trafficking in all its forms.’

Kakouris stressed that Cyprus views trafficking as ‘a grave violation of fundamental human rights, and an affront to our shared values,’ calling it ‘a heinous crime transcending borders’ and expressing that the country is ‘seriously alarmed by the statistics from the UNODC Global Report on Trafficking in Persons 2024.’

Drawing from national experience, he emphasized Cyprus’ shift toward ‘a comprehensive and victim-centered approach,’ highlighting legislative reforms that ‘criminalize all forms of trafficking in persons’ and strengthen protection frameworks. He pointed specifically to the amendment criminalizing the creation of child sexual abuse material through artificial intelligence, introduced because ‘technology is being weaponized for exploitation and victimization of children.’

He also underlined Cyprus’ 2023-2026 strategy on human trafficking, including a National Action Plan with ’38 actions, constantly evaluated by the Multidisciplinary Coordinating Group.’

Concluding, ambassador Kakouris urged that ‘human dignity is non-negotiable’ and called on states to ‘protect victims, prosecute perpetrators, and strengthen partnerships’ across governments, the UN system, civil society, and the private sector. Cyprus, he affirmed, ‘stands ready to continue to actively contribute to our global efforts.’
