MEC declares Alfred Gangata as winner for Lilongwe Mtandire-Mtsiriza Parliamentary Seat

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced that Alfred Gangata won the parliamentary election for the Lilongwe Mtandire–Mtsiriza constituency.

In a media briefing on Thursday, MEC Chairperson, Annabel Mtalimanja said Gangata, who represented governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), secured 12,369 votes while his closest competitor, George Zulu, received 12,360 votes.

The announcement follows a court ruling ordering MEC to release the results after George Zulu filed a complaint alleging several irregularities in the election, which had initially prompted MEC to withhold the results.

Gangata is DPP Central Region Vice President and Minister of State in President PeterMutharika’s administration.

Candace Cameron Bure Says Marriage to Val Bure Is a ‘Constant Reevaluation’

Candace Cameron Bure is an open book about her relationship with husband Valerie Bure, including their highs and lows.

“We had great years. We had some years I wish we could take back and do over,” Cameron Bure, 49, confessed about her marriage during the Monday, November 17, episode of the “Stay True” podcast. “It’s a constant reevaluation.”

The Fuller House alum explained, “I think year to year you have to reevaluate what’s working, what’s not. How are the schedules changing? And you have to continually adapt to what’s new to figure out your rhythms, and the rhythms are going to keep changing.”

Cameron Bure noted that “having a flexibility” is important “with each other as husband and wife, because that’s the first thing that’s going to go.”

She told host Madi Prewett, “Your marriage gets put to the test,” especially when you have children.

“You have kids that come in and they demand all of you. Then they get a little older and then they pit you against your husband,” Cameron Bure said with a laugh. “You don’t even realize it. They’re little manipulative beings that are so stinking cute.”

The Great American Family actress, who has been married 29 years, reiterated that “finding those rhythms and really finding time with you and your husband” on a deeper level is key.

“If I could lend you some advice, that would be it. You have to prioritize the relationship,” Cameron Bure added.

Cameron Bure revealed on her “Candace Cameron Bure Podcast” in July that she and Bure, 51, went through a “rough season,” before their eldest son, Lev, 25, sat them down and told them to put in the work.

“I’ll never forget, ’cause he said, ‘You know, I know I haven’t been married. I’m just a young kid. And so it’s probably hard to take marriage advice from someone this young [who] never experienced it before. But I don’t need to be married to know what the word of God says,’” Cameron Bure recalled of her son’s guidance.

The actress, who also shares daughter Natasha, 27, and son Maksim, 23, with Bure, exclusively told Us Weekly earlier this month that the couple have been through many “seasons.”

“There are days I wrestle with brokenness. I have experienced that,” Cameron Bure said on November 4. “I mean, we all do. I don’t know that it’s [something] I feel daily, but there have been seasons of that in my life.”

She acknowledged that the duo experienced times of “deep brokenness,” but by turning to God — who she described as “in the restoration business” — they were able to get to the best place they’ve been in a while.

“I’m more in love with my husband today than when we met. He is truly my best friend,” Cameron Bure told Us. “We’re in a different season of life because our kids are grown. We have two that are married, and you have to find your relationship again when the kids get older. And so we’re in this great season of life.”

Lainey Wilson Kicks Off CMAs With Medley Featuring Miranda Lambert and More

Lainey Wilson kicked off her first solo hosting gig at the 2025 CMA Awards with a bang.

Wilson, 33, began by telling the crowd at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena how much country music means to her. “I grew up in the village of Baskin in Louisiana, population 175, and ever since I was a little girl, country music has been a huge part of my world,” she said on Wednesday, November 19. “It was more than a genre, it’s a way of life. Growing up in Baskin, there were two things that my family made dang sure that we never missed — and that was bull riding and the CMAs. And if we were gonna miss one, it was not gonna be this.”

The “Somewhere Over Laredo” artist then paid tribute to her friends and colleagues by performing a medley of songs by nominees and attendees including Gretchen Wilson, Ella Langley, Brooks and Dunn, Lady A and Shaboozey. Little Big Town joined her when she began singing their hit “Girl Crush,” and Miranda Lambert stood up and sang along as Wilson put her spin on “Gunpowder & Lead.” The medley wrapped up with a guest appearance by Keith Urban, who joined Wilson on stage as he played guitar.

Wilson previously hosted the CMAs in 2024 with former NFL player Peyton Manning and fellow country superstar Luke Bryan, but this year’s event marked her first time emceeing the ceremony on her own. She is also nominated for six awards this year: Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, Single of the Year, Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year.

Speaking to Us Weekly exclusively for her cover story interview, Wilson acknowledged that she’d have a lot on her plate this year, as she’s also scheduled to perform during the show.

“It’s gonna be fun. It’s gonna be a very busy night,” she teased. “But I told ’em, I said, ‘If I can just get up there and y’all let me run my mouth and celebrate country music and celebrate all of my friends in this industry, then I think I’ll do OK.’”

Ahead of Wednesday’s event, Wilson was a nine-time CMA Award winner. In 2023, she took home the ceremony’s top prize, Entertainer of the Year, becoming the first woman to win the trophy in more than a decade. While she was nominated again in 2024, she lost to Morgan Wallen. Wallen, 32, is nominated again this year along with Wilson, Luke Combs, Cody Johnson and Chris Stapleton.

Everything to Know About the 2025 CMA Awards So Far

“This is all I’ve ever wanted to do. It’s the only thing I know how to do,” Wilson said in her Entertainer of the Year acceptance speech in 2023. “We have played about 186 shows this year, and we’ve worked our butts off this year and so many years in between. I’ve been in this town for 12 and a half years, and it finally feels like country music is starting to love me back. I love it with my whole heart.”

Last year, Wilson took home two CMA Awards, winning Music Video of the Year for “Wildflowers and Wild Horses” and her third consecutive trophy for Female Vocalist of the Year.

“I’ve always been told if you feel like you’ve got a gift, you’re supposed to share it, and I think that means whether you drive a tractor or pour coffee, make people smile or laugh, whatever that is I think you’re supposed to share that gift,” the “Hold My Halo” singer said in her acceptance speech for the latter award.

When will Mutharika reinstitute Parastatal boards amid fears of corruption breeding?

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-As of November 20, 2025, most of Malawi’s parastatal boards remain vacant, more than six weeks after the government dissolved all previous boards.

The Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) announced the dissolution of all boards of parastatal organisations and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) on October 7, 2025, with immediate effect.

When contacted on the appointments delay, President Peter Mutharika’s Press Secretary Cathy Maulidi referred The Maravi Post to Chief Secretary arguing that, “The State House is the last slot to comment as it starts from Chief Secretary”.

Chief Secretary to Malawi government Justin Saidi acknowledged the delay.

Saidi however cited complications in the appointment process as the reason for the delay in filling the vacancies.

He therefore assured that the reconstitution of boards is underway, though no comprehensive list of new appointees has been released to date.

The absence of functioning boards has created a governance vacuum, raising concerns among experts about potential risks and the concentration of power in the hands of SOE executives.

During this period, all matters requiring the attention of boards are being directed to the OPC through the Department of Statutory Corporations.

The Department has also suspended all ongoing and planned recruitments and major procurements across all parastatals to prevent irregularities during the transitional period.

Since the dissolution, the only notable appointment announced has been that of Felix Tambulasi as Commissioner General of the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA).

However, Tambulasi’s appointment is an executive position and does not address the vacancies at board level.

Governance experts warn that prolonged vacancies could hinder decision-making, delay critical projects, and increase administrative bottlenecks within state-owned enterprises.

Some observers have urged the government to expedite the appointment process to restore proper oversight and accountability in parastatals.

The government maintains that once the process is complete, new boards will be equipped to provide effective governance and ensure transparency in operations.

As the appointment process continues, stakeholders remain keenly monitoring developments to gauge how soon Malawi’s parastatals will regain functional leadership.

Zambia’s Hichilema UPND cadres abduct, harass former justice Minister Lubinda

LUSAKA-(MaraviPost)-The Zambian governing United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres on Wednesday reportedly abducted former Justice Minister Given Lubinda, subjecting him to harassment before police officers intervened to rescue him.

UPND is a major political party in Zambia, currently in power, with Hakainde Hichilema as the current President of Zambia and the party leader.

The incident escalated quickly as the group confronted Lubinda in what appeared to be a politically motivated attack.

Eyewitnesses say the cadres surrounded him, shouting threats and insults while attempting to force him into a vehicle against his will.

The situation grew tense as the harassment intensified, drawing the attention of bystanders who feared the confrontation might turn deadly.

According to witnesses, the cadres accused Lubinda of undermining the ruling party and vowed to “teach him a lesson,” signalling a troubling rise in political intolerance.

Police officers who were alerted to the incident arrived promptly at the scene and managed to disperse the attackers before safely extracting Lubinda from their hold.

Law enforcement authorities confirmed the rescue, noting that the cadres had acted unlawfully and would be pursued for criminal conduct.

In their statement, police condemned the attack and warned that political violence would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The rescue operation brought temporary relief, but it also sparked wider national concern about the growing pattern of political thuggery.

Several political commentators have criticized the incident, describing it as a dangerous reminder of how partisan violence threatens democratic stability.

Opposition figures have also condemned the attack, calling it a deliberate attempt to silence dissenting voices through intimidation.

Citizens across social media expressed outrage, urging authorities to take decisive action against perpetrators regardless of political affiliation.

Many observers have emphasized that political competition must never justify lawlessness, stressing the need for stronger protection of public figures.

Lubinda, though visibly shaken, was safely escorted to an undisclosed location where he is receiving support from colleagues and family members.

The incident has revived debate about Zambia’s political environment, with many calling for urgent reforms to curb cadre violence.

Analysts warn that the normalization of such attacks risks eroding public trust in law enforcement and institutional governance.

Others argue that unless perpetrators face real consequences, political violence will continue to grow and spread unchecked.

As investigations proceed, the public is demanding transparency, accountability, and meaningful action from both the police and the political leadership.

The attack on Lubinda serves as a stark reminder that democracy cannot thrive in an environment where fear replaces dialogue.

It also underscores the urgent need for political leaders to denounce cadre behaviour and promote a culture of peaceful engagement.

Zambia now watches closely as authorities take the next steps, hoping this incident marks a turning point in the fight against politically motivated violence.
